What Nzatu Muraya Is
Nzatu Muraya (美里村屋, read Nzatu Murayā in Okinawan) is a single-storey timber community hall in Misato, Okinawa City, Okinawa Prefecture, built in 1954 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on 25 April 2014. A muraya is the meeting house of a hamlet, and Nzatu is the Okinawan pronunciation of Misato.
The hall was put up by the people of the Misato district as their public hall, or kōminkan. Okinawa City records that it was framed in inumaki, a podocarp known in Okinawa as chāgi. Twenty years later, in 1974, the original red clay roof tiles were replaced with cement tiles, and residents have kept repairing the building ever since.
Nzatu Muraya faces south onto a neighbourhood street and covers about 164 m². The Misato Neighborhood Association owns and looks after it, and the association's present office, the Misato community centre at 2-19-13 Misato, stands close by.
Why Nzatu Muraya Was Registered
The Agency for Cultural Affairs registered Nzatu Muraya (registration no. 47-0082) under the criterion of buildings that contribute to the historic landscape of the country. Its commentary calls the building a former public hall with an open plan and regional character, and singles out the front eaves carried on amahaji posts as one of the features that tie it to Okinawan building practice.
The roof is the other point. Okinawa City notes that an irimoya (hip-and-gable) roof like this one is unusual in the prefecture, so the hall also records a stage in the changing building techniques of Okinawa. The city adds that the care the community has put into the building over six decades is part of why it was judged worth keeping. It was the fourth registered building in Okinawa City, after three structures moved to the Furusato-en open-air museum.
What to Look for at Nzatu Muraya
Begin at the front. The deep eave along the south side rests on a row of free-standing posts, the Amahaji that Okinawan houses use to make a shaded verandah against sun and squalls. Under this eave the building feels less like an office than a large porch, and that openness is exactly what the Agency's description picks out.
Then read the roof shape. The lower part slopes on all four sides, but near the ridge the two short ends turn into small vertical gables. That is the Irimoya-zukuri form, and the cement tiles laid in 1974 make the outline crisp and grey rather than the orange of a red-tiled Okinawan house.
Inside, according to the Agency, the plan is simple: one large meeting room in the middle, a corridor running round it, a toko (display alcove) on the west wall, an earth-floored area at the west end and a kitchen at the east end.
Visiting Nzatu Muraya
Nzatu Muraya is a working community building, not a museum, and no regular opening hours or admission fee are published. The exterior can be seen from the street that runs past its south front, which is also the best place to look at the amahaji posts and the roofline. To ask about seeing the interior, contact the Misato Neighborhood Association (098-937-3697) in advance.
No photography rules are published. Taking pictures of the exterior from the street is the considerate approach, and it is best to avoid photographing residents during meetings or events.
There is no railway in Okinawa City. The nearest stop marked on public maps is Misato Nichōme bus stop, roughly 250 metres from Nzatu Muraya in a straight line; check current routes with the Okinawa bus operators before you travel. Parking for visitors is not advertised.
