What Is the Togei Family Residence Stone Wall?

The Togei Family Residence Stone Wall (東迎家住宅石垣, Tōgei-ke Jūtaku Ishigaki) is a stone garden wall built in 1953 on a homestead in the Sonai settlement of Yonaguni Town, Okinawa Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan on March 7, 2008. It runs 9.5 meters east to west, stands about 1.5 meters high and is 0.7 meters thick.

A path leaves the road on the east side of the Togei plot, follows the plot's southern edge and ends at the main house. The Togei Family Residence Stone Wall divides that path from the front yard of the house. Anyone arriving from the road walks along the wall first and only then turns toward the front of the house.

In Japanese, ishigaki simply means "stone wall" and is unrelated to Ishigaki Island, the regional hub about 30 minutes away by air. Four other structures on the same homestead were registered on the same day: the main house, a well, a large stone basin called an ichitarai and a rainwater tank.

Why It Was Registered

The Togei Family Residence Stone Wall is listed under the criterion of structures that "contribute to the historic landscape of the country." The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a surviving element of the traditional Okinawan homestead layout.

An Okinawan homestead is generally laid out as a walled plot, with the main house and its outbuildings arranged inside and stone walls marking off the spaces between them. The Togei wall was registered as part of that arrangement: it is what separates the path from the front yard. That is why it sits among the Registered Tangible Cultural Properties listed for their place in the landscape rather than for their design.

Its registration number is 47-0065, the last in the homestead's run of five numbers beginning at 47-0061.

What to Look For

Stone Dug from the House Foundations

The most telling detail of the Togei Family Residence Stone Wall is where its stone came from. According to the Agency's description, the wall was built from rock removed when the foundations of the main house were dug. That is why the wall and the house share the same date, 1953. The ground that was cleared for the house supplied the wall that encloses its front yard.

In the years just after the Second World War, the household built with material the site itself provided, and these 9.5 meters of masonry are the result.

A Low, Thick Wall

At about 1.5 meters high and 0.7 meters thick, the wall is roughly chest to shoulder height for an adult with a generous thickness for its height. It has two faces, one toward the path and one toward the front yard, and it keeps the two apart.

The Wall and the Front of the House

The main house faces south, with a deep veranda eave called an amahaji along its front. The Togei Family Residence Stone Wall lies on that southern side, screening the front yard from people coming and going along the path.

Visiting the Togei Family Residence Stone Wall

The Togei Family Residence Stone Wall is on the grounds of a private home and is not open to the public. No visiting arrangements appear in the Yonaguni Tourism Association listings (checked September 2026). The path beside the wall belongs to the property too, so please do not step onto it from the road.

The homestead is in Sonai, the village that holds the town office. Stay on the public road when walking through, and avoid photographing into the property or its residents.

Ryukyu Air Commuter flies to Yonaguni in about 30 minutes from Ishigaki (3 flights a day) and about 1 hour 20 minutes from Naha. The Ferry Yonakuni leaves Ishigaki twice a week and reaches Kubura port, on the west of the island, in about 4 hours. A free town bus links Sonai, Kubura and Higawa, and rental cars are also available.
