What the Arai Family Residence Gate is

The Arai Family Residence Gate (新井家住宅門, Arai-ke Jūtaku Mon) is a timber Yakuimon gate built in 1932 at the Arai Family Residence in Nakasho, Izumisano City, Osaka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on July 8, 1999. It carries register number 27-0070 and has a building area of 32 square meters.

This is the front gate of the estate, which the owners call the daimon, or great gate. It stands at the southwest of the plot facing a slightly bending lane. Step through and a pine garden opens ahead, with the central entrance wing directly beyond. The earthen wall that closes the west side of the estate runs away on both sides of the gate.

The yakuimon form and why the Gate was registered

A yakuimon has main posts carrying the doors and a second pair of posts set behind them, with a single gabled roof spanning both pairs. Because the ridge sits behind the main posts, the roof projects well forward when seen from the front. The type was common at samurai residences and temples, and modern mansions used it to lend their front gates a sense of rank.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the Arai Family Residence Gate as a large yakuimon of three ken, a traditional unit of measure. It praises the heavy timbers and the hongawara-buki tile roof, which together give the gate a dignified presence worthy of the grand house behind it.

Its registration criterion, shared by all six entries, is contribution to the historic landscape. Of the six, the gate is the one anybody can see from outside the estate, and it is what announces the house to the surrounding streets of Nakasho.

What to look for at the Gate

Notice first where the gate stands. The Agency records that it is set back a little from the road, with short wing walls on either side. Pulling the gate back from the line of the boundary wall leaves a small forecourt in front of it and makes the entrance feel more formal.

Then look at the size of the members. The Agency points to the thick timbers of the posts and beams. From beside the gate you can see how the main posts, rear posts and beams lock together to carry the heavy tiled roof.

The roof alternates flat and round tiles in the hongawara manner. Since the ridge sits behind the main posts, the eaves reach deep over the front. Stand a little to one side rather than square on, and the gable end shows clearly how the front and rear posts relate.

Visiting the Gate

The Arai Family Residence Gate faces a public road, so its exterior can be seen from the street at any time. The house is private, however, and you may pass through the gate only on group tour days arranged with the owners and on the free autumn open day (checked September 27, 2026).

If you take photographs from the road, watch for traffic, and avoid lingering at the gate of what is still a family property. On the open day, visitors are asked not to come by car because parking is limited.
