The Corner Storehouse with a Veranda
The Ebara Family Residence Storehouse No. 3 (榎原家住宅土蔵三, Ebara-ke Jūtaku Dozō San) is a fireproof storehouse built between 1830 and 1868 in Ozone, Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on October 7, 2014. It occupies the northwest corner of the Ebara compound, under registration number 27-0603.
The Ebara Family Residence Storehouse No. 3 is a 2-storey Dozo-zukuri building with its ridge running north to south, measuring 4.9 metres by 4.0 metres; the building area is 31 square metres, with a covered passage attached. As the westernmost of the three storehouses along the north side, it closes off the corner of the property.
A Storehouse Tied into Daily Life
The Council for Cultural Affairs judged all three storehouses to be carefully built in the dozo manner and to set off the old family's compound, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs describes this one in the same terms. It was registered as contributing to the historic landscape of the country.
The Ebara Family Residence Storehouse No. 3 has features the other two lack: a veranda and lean-to roof along its southeast face, and a covered passage attached toward the west end of its south side. A storehouse is normally set apart from the living quarters to keep fire at a distance, but this one is drawn into the household's circulation by its veranda and passage. It may have held things the family used often, though no record of its contents has been found.
What to Look For: Plaster Headband and the Southeast Veranda
The roof is a gabled Kirizuma-zukuri form in heavy Hongawarabuki tile. The walls are lime-plastered Shikkui with a Hachimaki, the thick plaster band beneath the eaves that guards the roof edge against fire. On the northwest faces, which look outward from the corner of the property, vertical boards protect the walls to about waist height.
Along the southeast face run the veranda and a lean-to Geya roof. The light eave and floorboards soften the heavy earthen box considerably when seen from inside the compound. The covered passage leaves from the west end of the south side, linking the storehouse with the rest of the household.
Visiting
The Ebara Family Residence Storehouse No. 3 stands within a private residence and is not open to the public. Although it sits at the northwest corner of the lot, its veranda and passage face into the compound and cannot be seen from the street. Photography on the property is not possible.
