About the Former Nakamura Family Residence

The Former Nakamura Family Residence (旧中村家住宅, Kyū Nakamura-ke Jūtaku) is the estate of a former village headman's family at 346 Amami, Kawachinagano City, Osaka Prefecture, built around a late Edo-period main house (1751 to 1830) with outbuildings from 1897 to 1906, and its five structures were entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on August 7, 2023. The five are the main house, the west zashiki wing, the study and connecting corridor, the storehouse and the gate row house. They carry consecutive registration numbers, 27-0888 to 27-0892, and all became Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on the same day.

Amami is the southern tip of Kawachinagano, a narrow valley below Kimi Pass on the border with Wakayama Prefecture. Kawachinagano City describes the Nakamura family as an old household that served as village headmen in a settlement close to the pass. According to Osaka Bunkazai Navi, a heritage guide run by Osaka architects' and owners' associations, the estate sits in the Shimanotani hamlet, where terraced rice fields and thatched farmhouses survive, on a stone-walled platform built up beside a stream.

How the Estate Took Shape

The oldest of the five buildings is the main house. The Agency for Cultural Affairs database dates it to the late Edo period and records that it was moved to the site in the Meiji 30s (1897 to 1906) and renovated in 1972. It is a Yamatomune farmhouse, thatched and now protected by a temporary sheet-metal cover, and it keeps many features of old farmhouses in the Kawachi region.

Line up the dates of the other four and they fall in the same window as that move: the storehouse in 1897, the gate row house in 1899, and the west zashiki wing and the study with its corridor in the Meiji 30s. At the Former Nakamura Family Residence, then, an Edo-period house forms the core, and the reception rooms, storehouse and gate were arranged around it near the end of the Meiji era.

The alcove post and alcove boards of the west zashiki wing use naturally fluted Kitayama cedar and single planks of Keyaki. Both the national description and Kawachinagano City read this choice of timber as a record of the family's former business in forestry.

Layout of the Nakamura Estate

The gate row house closes the south side of the Former Nakamura Family Residence. Across a courtyard to the north stands the main house, long from east to west. The west zashiki wing joins it on the west under a continuous roofline, and the storehouse stands behind the main house on the north side of the plot. In the northwest corner are the study and a connecting corridor: the study attaches to the storehouse on its east face, and the corridor runs along the top of the stone wall on the west, closing the edge of the estate.

The natural way in is through the gate row house on the south. From the gate you look across the courtyard, past a pine, to the front of the main house. Osaka Bunkazai Navi identifies it as a mongaburi pine, trained to spread its branches over the gateway, a feature that was popular from the late Edo into the Meiji period. From the main house you can continue into the west zashiki wing, then return to the courtyard and walk round to the north and west sides to see the storehouse, study and corridor from outside.

Visiting the Former Nakamura Family Residence

Today the Former Nakamura Family Residence is used as a cafe, Sansen Sozen Kyuemon, run as an annex of Amami Onsen Nantenen, so you can go inside as a customer. Osaka Bunkazai Navi lists the property as partly open to the public. The Kawachinagano tourism association gives opening hours of 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., closed on Wednesdays. There is no published policy on visits purely to see the buildings, so it is worth calling ahead (0721-69-9238) before you go.

No official guidance on photography is posted. Inside a working cafe, keep other guests out of your frame and ask the staff before photographing the rooms.

By train, take the Nankai Koya Line to Amami Station, about 40 minutes from Namba. From the station the Former Nakamura Family Residence is roughly a 15-minute walk along the valley road. There is parking on the property for drivers.
