A gate held between two storehouses
Most visitors read the Koda residence from the road before they ever step through it, and the front gate is what does the reading for them. It stands on the north side of the compound, facing the street, with a storehouse pressing in on either side. The effect is theatrical without being loud: gate and storehouses together compose a single stretch of frontage.
The gate was built in 1935 with the rest of the house and, since 2023, has been a Registered Tangible Cultural Property. Its frontage is modest, about 3.9 metres, but the detailing is not. The roof is a ryosage form, sloping down to front and back, covered in hongawara, the heavy pairing of broad concave tiles and rounded cover tiles used on higher-status buildings.
Details that signal status
Look up and the eaves reach well past the wall. They are carried on a degeta, a purlin set out beyond the posts so the roof can overhang deeply. The doors themselves are made of noticeably thick timber and fitted with hasso kanagu, the decorative iron mounts whose curved outline was a mark of formality on a gate of this kind. To the west a narrower bay is closed with a sliding lattice door, the everyday wicket used when the main doors stayed shut.
Because the ground inside sits higher than the street, a short flight of stone steps lifts you from the road into the compound. A gate was one of the few parts of a house that outsiders saw at close range, and here every choice, from the tile to the ironwork to the raised approach, was calculated to state the standing of a former headman family.
Seeing it in context
The gate is registered not for rarity but for the way it shapes a historic streetscape, and it is best understood from a few steps back. From there the low gate reads against the taller storehouse walls to either side, and the whole north frontage settles into a composed picture of a well-established Osaka farmhouse.
The residence is now the annex of the Fukae Local History Museum, in a district known since ancient times for its sedge-hat making. The exterior, including this gate, can be taken in from the public street at any time, while access to the grounds and interior follows the museum's schedule.
