Karasunomiya Shrine Worship Hall: Dragons in the Gable
The Karasunomiya Shrine Worship Hall (鴉宮拝殿, Karasunomiya Haiden) is a timber worship hall of 1931 in the precinct of Karasunomiya Shrine in Denpo, Konohana Ward, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2008.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records that the Karasunomiya Shrine Worship Hall stands in the centre of the precinct in front of the main hall. It measures 7.3 metres by 5.5 metres under a gabled roof of copper sheet, with a building area of 40 square metres.
Why It Was Registered
The Karasunomiya Shrine Worship Hall is registration number 27-0457, listed under the criterion of being a model of design. The Agency notes its one-step projecting brackets, carved frog-leg struts between them, and closely spaced double rafters at the eaves.
The gable is filled by a triple tie-beam composition projecting one step, with a lower tier of closely set bracket sets with carved beam ends and a middle tier filled with a cloud-and-dragon carving. The Agency describes the hall as richly decorated, in contrast to the austere shinmei-style main hall.
What to Look For at the Worship Hall
Look up at the gable: above the tightly packed brackets, a carved band of clouds and dragons fills the triangle of the roof end.
The struts between the brackets are carved too. Compare the hall with the straight-lined main hall seen through the middle gate behind it; both date from 1931, yet the two were given deliberately different characters.

The worship hall is in use and can be seen from outside when visiting the shrine. No official information on viewing the interior was found. Keep quiet and avoid disturbing ceremonies or worshippers.
