What is the Kawano Family Residence Front Gate and Reception Room?

The Kawano Family Residence Front Gate and Reception Room (河野家住宅表門及び座敷, Kawano-ke Jūtaku Omotemon oyobi Zashiki) is a late Edo-period gatehouse with an attached reception room that stands in the southeast corner of the Kawano family's compound in Uchida-cho, Izumi City, Osaka Prefecture, facing east, and it was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (Registered Tangible Cultural Property) on March 6, 2024. It is a single-story timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 34 square meters.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to the late Edo period (1830 to 1868) and records an extension in the late Meiji period. Izumi City says the Kawano Family Residence Front Gate and Reception Room went up at the same time as the main house. As the gate that faces the street and gives the compound its public face, it was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape of the country.

A row gate with a storeroom and a servants' room

The gate itself is a Nagayamon, a row gate whose ridge runs north to south and which takes rooms into the gate building on either side of the passage. At the Kawano Family Residence Front Gate and Reception Room, the passage runs through the middle, with a storeroom to the north and a room for male servants to the south, where hired hands probably slept.

From the west side of the gate, a reception room runs off with its ridge at right angles, east to west. Gate and room together form an L-shaped plan (Kaneore) when seen from above. Izumi City's description sums it up as a row gate with the servants' room and the reception room on its south side.

Six mats, a hanging alcove and a flat study window

The reception room of the Kawano Family Residence Front Gate and Reception Room is a single room of six tatami mats. In its southwest corner are a hanging alcove (tsuridoko), where a short wall hung from the ceiling stands in for a full tokonoma with its raised floor, and a flat study window (hira-shoin), a paper-screened opening onto the veranda that does not project from the wall. Both are modest versions of the formal alcove and study bay, in keeping with a room of this size.

A veranda (Engawa) wraps around the north and west sides. Placing a properly furnished room right beside the gate suggests care for guests at the threshold of the house: somewhere to receive a caller who did not need to be shown into the main house, perhaps, or a room for whoever kept the gate. No record of how it was actually used was found for this article.

Visiting the Kawano Family Residence Front Gate and Reception Room

The gate of the Kawano Family Residence Front Gate and Reception Room is still the way into Kawanotei, and in April 2026 the registration plaque sent by the Agency for Cultural Affairs was mounted on it. If you come during the opening hours of the gallery or café, you walk through the gate passage into the grounds.

It is unconfirmed if the reception room is open inside. The east face of the gate can be seen from the street, and the north side of the reception room from within the grounds. Visitors with limited mobility are asked to use the path along the river instead of the front gate.
