The Kimura Family Residence in Yao

The Kimura Family Residence (木村家住宅, Kimura-ke Jūtaku) is the former estate of a Kawachi cotton merchant in Higashihonmachi, Yao City, Osaka Prefecture; its late Edo-period main house, a storehouse built in 1825, a main storehouse and a tea room were listed together as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on 24 June 2021. They carry consecutive registration numbers, 27-0819 to 27-0822, and all four were listed for contributing to the historic landscape of the country.

The house stands on the south side of an east-west street about 200 meters south of Kintetsu Yao Station. To the east that street meets the old Tateishi Kaido road; to the west it was the approach to Jokoji, the temple known locally as Yao Jizo. In the Edo period this was Higashigo village, on the eastern edge of the Yao temple town.

Yao City now owns the buildings and the land. According to the city, the owner donated the house and its site to the city. Some recent city documents call it the Former Kimura Family Residence (旧木村家住宅), but the registered name is Kimura Family Residence.

Momen-ya Shobei: a cotton house

For generations the Kimura family traded Kawachi cotton under the shop name Momen-ya Shobei, "Shobei the cotton dealer". The survey report written for the registration and published by Yao City traces the family to local warriors who served the Miyoshi clan at Wakae Castle in the late medieval period. Around the Keicho era (1596 to 1615) the family turned to the cotton trade and the head took the name Shobei.

When the Yamato River was rerouted in the early 18th century, the old riverbeds of central Kawachi became cotton fields, and the Kimura joined the Yao guild of cotton brokers. The trade collapsed after cheap imported yarn arrived in the Meiji era and the import duty on raw cotton was abolished in 1894. The family closed the business in 1905 on the death of the fifteenth Shobei, and later heads of the house practiced medicine.

The family kept a large archive, including what the city describes as the oldest document showing the activities of a Kawachi cotton merchant. Three plans of the estate also survive: a geomancy plan thought to date from 1842, a near-contemporary copy, and a measured plan from about 1903 to 1905. All three show the main house with its storehouses; the tea room first appears on the Meiji plan.

How the Kimura Family Residence is laid out

The main house sits in the middle of the estate, facing the street to the north. The storehouse stands immediately to its west, joined by a corridor, so the two buildings form a continuous front along the road. Behind the rear reception room is the tea room, and beyond it, southwest of the main house, the main storehouse runs north to south. A garden opens to the southeast of the tea room.

  • Main House: a late Edo town house with a low Tsushi-nikai upper floor and a building area of 204 square meters, with an earth-floored Doma to the east and six raised rooms to the west.
  • Storehouse: dated to 1825 by a prayer tablet on the ridge beam. The 1842 plan labels it the "cotton store".
  • Main Storehouse: the Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to the late Meiji era, while the survey argues it was built in the late Edo period and repaired in late Meiji. A fan in plaster relief, a Kote-e, decorates its gable.
  • Tea Room: built in the mid-Meiji era and enlarged in late Meiji, with a three-mat and a four-and-a-half-mat room side by side and a plaque reading Gettoan at the corridor entrance.

The dates run from 1825 into the late Meiji era, so the estate records both the working premises of an Edo merchant and the tea culture of its Meiji heads. The Agency calls the main house a fine surviving town house of a merchant family that made its fortune in Kawachi cotton, and its frontage with the storehouse still shapes the old street.

Visiting the Kimura Family Residence

The Kimura Family Residence is not open to the public at present, and Yao City states that the interior cannot be visited. Please stay off the property; the street to the north gives a view of the main house and storehouse fronts. The main storehouse and tea room stand behind the main house and are hard to see from the road.

Yao City plans to restore and reuse the house with a private partner. After sounding out businesses in 2025, the city published an implementation policy on 2 October 2026 for a project run under a public facility operating right, or concession. A new building is to rise on the plot to the west and work together with the old house, and operation is scheduled to begin in October 2030. Check announcements from Yao City for opening dates and conditions.

The nearest station is Kintetsu Yao on the Kintetsu Osaka Line; the house is about 200 meters south of the station, a walk of a few minutes. No visitor parking is provided. Enquiries go to the Tourism and Cultural Properties Division of Yao City, telephone 072-924-8555.
