About the Komori Family Residence

The Komori Family Residence (小森家住宅, Komori-ke Jūtaku) in Tanimachi, Chuo-ku, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture, is a house compound centred on a main house built around 1924, and its main house, storehouse and front gate were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on June 21, 2013 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Each of the three buildings was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2013, under the consecutive registration numbers 27-0562 to 27-0564, as a building that contributes to the historic landscape of the country.

The storehouse is the oldest of the three: the Agency dates it to the late Edo period, between 1751 and 1830. The main house and the gate both date from around 1924, so the Komori Family Residence pairs an Edo-period storehouse with a house and gate of the Taisho era.

The Layout of the Komori Family Residence

The Komori Family Residence occupies a corner plot at the northwest of its block, with the main house in the middle of the plot (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The storehouse sits in the northwest corner with its ridge running east to west, and the front gate, on the west side toward the north, is joined to it, with board fences running north and south.

The main house was renovated in 1945 and 2003, and the storehouse in 1945 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency singles out the storehouse of the Komori Family Residence as a rare Edo-period survivor in a neighbourhood transformed by war damage and other causes.

Each building is described in detail on its own page.
