What Is the Nakanishi Family Residence?

The Nakanishi Family Residence (中西家住宅, Nakanishi-ke Jūtaku) is the estate of a village headman family in Kishibe-naka 4-chome, Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, built between the late Edo period and the Meiji era; seven of its buildings, led by a main house of 1826, were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on 1 July 2003. Suita City now runs it as the Former Nakanishi Residence (旧中西家住宅, Kyū Nakanishi-ke Jūtaku), also called the Suita Kishibe Bunjin Bokkaku Geihinkan, and opens it by reservation.

The Nakanishi were ōjōya, senior headmen who answered for fourteen villages in Shimashimo District, according to the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Their compound fills a broad plot at the northwest edge of what was Higashi village in the old Kishibe township; Osaka Bunkazai Navi puts it at about 1,000 tsubo, roughly 3,300 square metres. The Confucian scholar and poet Hirose Kyokusō wrote that the house was so splendid it could pass for a daimyo's residence.

In January 2007 the family gave the estate to Suita City together with its furniture, asking that it serve the city. The facility name joins Kishibe, the old place name, with bunjin bokkaku geihinkan, a guest house for scholars and painters, a nod to the writers and artists the family entertained. You will see both names: Nakanishi Family Residence in the national register, Former Nakanishi Residence on city signs.

Layout of the Estate

The Nakanishi Family Residence faces a street on the south. Between the street and the gate lies a forecourt about 3 metres deep, sunk like a dry moat, and behind it stands a nagayamon gatehouse 10 ken (about 18 metres) long. The east end of the gatehouse turns north to meet the inner storehouse, while the Kizara shed runs west along the street, doubling as a boundary wall. The Agency describes these three as the face of the estate.

Through the gate, the main house stands a little north of centre, facing south. The accounting room sits to its east, and two storehouses, No. 1 to the west and No. 2 to the east, stand behind it on the north. On the east side of the path from gate to house is a garden of two stone-edged dry ponds joined by a dry stream and crossed by a stone bridge.

The main house dates from 1826; the gatehouse, the inner storehouse and both storehouses from the late Edo period; the accounting room and the Kizara shed from the Meiji era. A plan of the estate from the Tenpō era (1830s) shows no accounting room and draws both storehouses touching the main house; they were later hauled north in the Meiji years. Comparing that plan with the grounds today shows how the rear of the estate was reorganised after 1868.

The seven buildings carry consecutive registration numbers, 27-0237 to 27-0243. Only the main house was registered as a model of design; the other six were registered for their contribution to the historic landscape, a recognition of the estate as an ensemble.

City Protection and the Garden

Separately from the national register, Suita City protected the Nakanishi Family Residence as a municipal cultural property on 23 May 2006. The city's listing covers nine buildings, the seven above plus a well house and a barn, and also includes three wooden mallets inscribed with a date in 1826, thought to have been used at the ridge-raising of the main house, and estate plans from 1834, 1835 and 1900.

The garden in front of the main house, known as the Former Nakanishi Garden, was placed on the national register on 1 August 2013. Osaka Bunkazai Navi dates its making to the period from the end of the Edo era to 1900.

Visiting the Nakanishi Family Residence

Visits are by advance reservation and free of charge. The buildings and garden open together on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays for guided sessions at 10:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m., each limited to 30 people and lasting about 1 hour 30 minutes. On Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays only the garden is open, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. The residence is closed on Mondays and from 29 December to 3 January.

Bookings open at 9:30 a.m. on the 1st of the month before your visit, by phone or fax (06-6386-1182) or through Suita City's online application system; if places remain, you can book until 4:30 p.m. the day before. The residence closes when storm warnings are issued for the northern Osaka area.

April and November bring special openings with a different schedule. The autumn 2026 special opening runs from 21 to 29 November (closed on the 23rd) and includes the painted sliding doors of the detached reception rooms and the inside of the tearoom, which are normally closed. Bookings for it open on 1 October at 9:30 a.m.; from 1 to 19 November only the garden is open.

Suita City's visitor information does not say whether photography is allowed, so ask the guide on the day.

The nearest station is Kishibe on the JR Kyoto Line, about 10 minutes on foot. Shōjaku Station on the Hankyu Kyoto Line is about 15 minutes away, and the Kishibe-kōji stop of Hankyu Bus about 2 minutes. There is no parking, and visitors are asked not to come by car.
