What Is the Nishiyama Family Residence Main Gate and High Wall?
The Nishiyama Family Residence Main Gate and High Wall (西山家住宅正門及び高塀, Nishiyama-ke Jūtaku Seimon oyobi Takabei) is a wooden gate and wall of 1912 along the north edge of the Nishiyama Family Residence in Okamachiminami, Toyonaka City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2018.
The gate is 1.8 meters wide and tiled. The wall runs from it and turns a right-angled corner, with a total length of 13 meters. The national record classes the pair as a single structure and counts it as one item, registration number 27-0756.
A separate, 49-meter high wall registered in 2007 continues down the east side of the plot. The two meet at the northeast corner, so together they close off two sides of the property.
Why the Gate and Wall Were Registered
The Nishiyama Family Residence Main Gate and High Wall became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 2, 2018, the same day as the main house, under the criterion for structures that contribute to the historic landscape of the nation.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the gate and wall the anchor of a calm, early suburban streetscape. The Okamachi estate went on sale in 1912, and its streets were once lined with gates and walls like these. Here the street front of that period is still intact.
What to Look For at the Main Gate and High Wall
A bracket gate with a lattice transom
The main gate is an Udekimon, a simple gate type whose roof rests on brackets projecting forward and back from the posts, here under a gabled roof. Above the lintel sits a finely made lattice transom, and small canopies project on both faces. The double doors are panelled in zelkova wood and lock with a wooden bar on the inside.
Toyonaka City's preservation plan notes that the Nishiyama Family Residence Main Gate is set back about 90 centimeters, half a ken, from the line of the wall, with a second set of brackets filling the gap. From the street, the gate reads as a shadowed recess in the long wall.
Charred cedar and straight-edged tiles
The wall is about 3 meters high and built in the Shinkabe manner, with its timber posts left exposed. Its tall lower section is clad in vertical boards of Yakisugi, charred cedar, fixed in the yamato pattern: alternate boards are nailed to the front and back so that they overlap, and the thickness of each board shows as a vertical line of shadow. Above the boarding the wall is plastered, and the coping is laid with ichimonji tiles, whose straight-cut edges give the eave a single clean line.
Clues to a later rebuild
The same plan points out small differences between the north and east walls. The east wall stands on soft stone footings, while the north wall uses some granite. A family document of December 1940 records the cost of renewing the wooden fence on the street side, and the north wall is in better condition than the east. Taken together, the plan suggests the north wall may have been rebuilt at about the time the garden was redesigned.
Visiting the Main Gate and High Wall
The Nishiyama Family Residence Main Gate and High Wall faces the street on the north side of the plot and can be seen from the road at any time. Of the six registered structures at the residence, this and the east wall are the only ones you can see without joining an event. The grounds themselves are open only during city events (checked October 2, 2026).
Stand across the road to take in the gate and wall together, and the setback of the gate is easy to see. Up close, look at how the boards overlap and how the wall turns the corner to join the east wall. This is a residential street, so please keep your visit quiet. Directions are on the Nishiyama Family Residence page.
