What Is the Sakanoue Family Residence Outer Wall?
The Sakanoue Family Residence Outer Wall (阪之上家住宅外塀, Sakanoue-ke Jūtaku Sotobei) is a boundary wall of around 1921 on the west side of a private house in Hamadera Showa-cho, Nishi Ward, Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 18 November 1999. It runs for 19 meters, and the registration includes its stone gateposts.
The Sakanoue Outer Wall links the northwest corner of the lot to the northwest corner of the family's brick Western-style building. Built at about the same time as that building, it continues its street frontage as one unbroken face along the western road.
Buttresses Shaped to Match the Pilasters
What makes the Sakanoue Family Residence Outer Wall worth a look is the row of buttresses on its street side. According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, they were designed to echo the pilasters of the Western-style building. Because that building's west wall stands right on the street, the wall was given the same vertical rhythm so that the two would read together from the road.
On the brick building the pilasters rise all the way to the parapet. The buttresses pick up that beat, so as you walk along the street the divisions carry on from building to wall without a change of tempo. The wall is treated less as a boundary than as an extension of the building's elevation.
Gateposts Set Back from the Road
The stone gateposts of the Sakanoue Outer Wall stand near the Western-style building, pulled back from the line of the wall toward the house. The recess creates a small forecourt and quietly marks where the lot is entered.
Setting the gate back rather than pushing it to the edge of the road gives the entrance a sense of room suited to a garden suburb. The Agency values the Sakanoue Family Residence Outer Wall as part of the residential streetscape and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.
Seeing the Sakanoue Outer Wall
The wall encloses a private home, and the grounds are not open to visitors. Since it faces the western street, the Sakanoue Family Residence Outer Wall, its buttresses and the gateposts can all be seen from the public road.
Walk along the street from the north side of the brick building to the end of the wall to see how the pilasters and buttresses line up. Please do not step inside the gateposts or lean on the wall.
