The Tanaka Family Residence Rice Storehouse

The Tanaka Family Residence Rice Storehouse (田中家住宅米蔵, Tanaka-ke Jūtaku Komegura) is a single-storey earthen-walled storehouse built in early Meiji (1868 to 1882) on the Tanaka compound in Yamanoue, Hirakata City, Osaka Prefecture, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on November 2, 2018. It was repaired around 1965.

It stands on the southern edge of the grounds between the nagaya gate and the annex, running east to west: a dozō of 27 square metres under a gabled pantile roof.

Part of the Street Front

The Agency for Cultural Affairs places the Tanaka Family Residence Rice Storehouse alongside the nagaya gate and annex as part of the dignified frontage of an old family. It was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, and it holds the middle of that southern row.

For a landowning family the rice store was the key building, holding tenant rice and the family's own harvest. Here it sits right next to the front gate, facing the street.

Yoriki Windows and Plastered Eaves

Like the annex, it rests on dressed-stone footings with white plaster above and vertical boarding below. The eaves are plastered over while keeping the shape of the rafters, so a row of rafter ends seems to emerge from the smooth plaster.

The south wall has 2 yoriki windows, latticed openings each under its own small roof. Seen from the street, they are the storehouse's most recognisable feature.

Access

The Rice Storehouse is on the southern edge of the grounds, and its south wall with the yoriki windows should be visible from the street. No official information on public opening could be found; the compound appears to be a private home, and the grounds cannot be entered.
