About United Church of Christ in Japan Tenma Church

United Church of Christ in Japan Tenma Church (日本基督教団天満教会, Nihon Kirisuto Kyōdan Tenma Kyōkai; the church itself uses the spelling Temma) is a 4-storey reinforced concrete church in Tenjin-Nishimachi, Kita Ward, Osaka City, built in 1929 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan in 2015. It faces the torii gate of Osaka Tenmangu Shrine from across the street.

The congregation was founded in 1879 and has worshipped on this site for more than 140 years. The present building was constructed with the Nakamura-style reinforced concrete system devised by the architect Nakamura Mamoru (中村鎮). The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a renovation in 1959 and a building area of 362 square meters.

The ground floor holds a meeting hall, while the sanctuary fills the 2nd and 3rd floors as a single tall space. A 3rd-floor gallery overlooks it, and the church now livestreams its services from there.

Why Tenma Church Is a Registered Cultural Property

United Church of Christ in Japan Tenma Church joined the national register on August 4, 2015, as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (registration number 27-0618), under the criterion of serving as a model of design.

The Agency's description singles out two things. Outside, the façade is close to symmetrical, and the front of the stairwell is composed of rectangular motifs. Inside, the sanctuary is spanned by elliptical arched beams, and each beam is pierced by a row of smaller arches. In both structure and ornament, the Agency says, the building reflects the architectural thinking of the early Shōwa years.

In 2012 the church completed a major project combining seismic strengthening, conservation repairs and barrier-free access, designed by the architectural office 石田忠範建築研究所. Fujiki Komuten, the contractor for that work, notes that few buildings in Nakamura's system survive. Registration followed once the building had been prepared for continued use.

What to See at Tenma Church

The sanctuary on the 2nd floor is the heart of United Church of Christ in Japan Tenma Church. Elliptical arched beams sweep across the ceiling, and along their sides runs a line of small arched cut-outs. The beams that hold up the roof double as the room's main decoration.

Osaka Bunkazai Navi, a heritage database for Osaka, also draws attention to the contrast between the white ceiling and the dark brown pews and floorboards.

In November 2021 a pipe organ by the French builder Garnier was completed in the sanctuary. It has 2 manuals and pedals, 17 stops and 1,038 pipes, and weighs about 4,200 kilograms. Rather than a symmetrical case, it was given an outline that follows the sanctuary's arches, and the final voicing took about 2 months, carried out pipe by pipe inside the room.

On the exterior, look for the rectangular detailing around the stairwell and the cross and nameplate set at the center of the façade. Seen from the Tenjinbashi-suji side, the near-symmetry of the front is easy to read.

Visiting United Church of Christ in Japan Tenma Church

United Church of Christ in Japan Tenma Church is an active congregation and does not offer sightseeing tours; Osaka Bunkazai Navi lists it as not open for visits. The façade can be viewed from the street.

The way to see the sanctuary is to attend the Sunday service, held from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. The church welcomes first-time visitors and lends Bibles and hymnals at the sanctuary entrance. Since the 2012 works there is step-free access from the street, along with an elevator and a wheelchair-accessible restroom.

Besides the church's own events, many outside groups hold concerts in the sanctuary, which makes a concert another good way to hear the organ in this space.
