About the Former Arai Family Residence Guest Hall
The Former Arai Family Residence Guest Hall (旧新井家住宅客殿, Kyū Arai-ke Jūtaku Kyakuden) is a two-storey timber reception building in Komahongo, Hidaka City, Saitama Prefecture, built in 1906 for the Arai family, village headmen of Komahongo, to entertain honored guests, and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on April 25, 2014. With a building area of 93 square meters, it is the second-largest structure on the estate after the main house.
The guest hall stands southwest of the main house and faces east. Its roof is a hip-and-gable (Irimoya-zukuri) form, re-tiled in 1998, and Hidaka City's survey measured the building at 12.8 by 5.5 meters. The 1906 date rests on two kinds of evidence: documents kept by the Arai family and the building's style. Of the six registered structures, only this hall and the barn can be dated to a single year.
Why the Guest Hall Was Registered
The Former Arai Family Residence Guest Hall is registration number 11-0136, listed for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs draws attention to its carriage porch and to the guest rooms placed at the south end of each floor, and describes the whole as refined and elegant.
Hidaka City goes further, saying the fittings were designed with the full shoin style of formal Japanese architecture in mind. Building a separate hall purely for receiving visitors, apart from the family's own house, tells you a good deal about the standing the Arai family meant to show in late Meiji Japan.
A Curved Gable and Rooms with a View
At the middle of the ground floor on the east front is the entrance, with a Shikidai, a raised formal step for receiving guests of rank. Over it rises a Noki-karahafu, the undulating, bow-shaped gable familiar from temple gates and castle halls. The city notes that this front-facing karahafu is fitted with carvings to give the entrance its formal air. A porch and step like these were where a high-ranking caller could alight and enter without crossing the working parts of the house; on the Arai guest hall they are compressed onto a narrow two-storey front.
The plan is long and slim. According to the Agency for Cultural Affairs, the ground floor holds four rooms plus a bathroom and a toilet, and the upper floor three rooms. On both floors the southernmost room is a guest room, furnished with a Tokonoma alcove, staggered shelves (Chigaidana) and a built-in desk (Tsukeshoin).
The guest rooms are also fitted with a balustrade (Kōran). Because the Former Arai Family Residence Guest Hall stands near the southwest edge of the terrace, the view beyond the rail opens onto the Kinchakuda meadow, and the national database explains the balustrade as a way of securing that view. The best room in the house was put where the best view was.
In 2016 the city cut a hearth into the ground-floor guest room so that it can be used for tea gatherings, and fitted a preparation area on the east side of a long four-mat room. The hall had also been renovated in fiscal 2012.
Visiting the Guest Hall
The exterior of the Former Arai Family Residence Guest Hall can be seen whenever Komagō Kominka is open. The karahafu porch is on the east front, so stand in the front garden facing it to make out the carvings; with the building facing east, the gable is best lit in the morning.
The city has published photographs of the guest rooms, but its visitor information does not say how much of the interior ordinary visitors may enter. The ground floor of the guest hall is also rented out for tea gatherings and exhibitions, which can restrict access on those days.
