What the Nagase Takao Family Residence Barn Is
The Nagase Takao Family Residence Barn (永瀬孝男家住宅納屋) is a two-storey wooden outbuilding of the late Taisho era, between 1919 and 1926, in Honmachi 1-chome, Kawaguchi City, Saitama Prefecture, listed as Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 29 March 2019. It stands north of the Western-style building, facing south, and covers 39 square metres.
The roof is gabled, Kirizuma-zukuri, and sheeted in metal. A lean-to one Ken deep runs along the front, left open on all sides except at its west end, which is partitioned off as a small room. Inside, the ground floor is a single earth floor, Doma, with a stair at the west end. The upper floor served as storage and has vertical-barred windows on the front.
Alone among the seven structures, this one holds no formal room, no strongroom and no machinery. Nowhere to sit, nothing to lock away. It exists to absorb the daily work of the estate and the movement of goods through it.
Why It Was Listed
The Nagase Takao Family Residence Barn was listed for its contribution to the historic character of the landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs entry describes it as an outbuilding that conveys the traditional composition of a foundry family's residence.
The word traditional repays attention. The Western-style building on this estate went up around 1922, a new kind of house built around an American pattern of living. The barn dates from the late Taisho era, essentially the same span of years. So the most modern building and the most conventional outbuilding on the site were raised within a few seasons of one another. The public face of the household was being updated while the working end was added in the old manner. That simultaneity is what the composition here actually records.
The registration system for tangible cultural properties was created precisely to reach buildings of this kind, not only the shrines, temples and castles that had always been selected. The Nagase Takao Family Residence Barn is a straightforward case of what the system was for.
What to Look For
Start with the lean-to across the front. One ken, roughly 1.8 metres, of roof carried on posts with no walls beneath it, making a half-outdoor band where loads could stand out of the rain. Only the west end is closed off as a room, so open shelter and enclosed space share a single lean-to. You can see a building that acquired its partitions through use.
The barred upper windows are the other external feature. They light and ventilate a storage floor while keeping the opening protected. Glass was spreading by this date, and the decision to make do with vertical bars says exactly what level of performance this building was asked for.
The earth floor is the interior's defining feature. The ground storey of the Nagase Takao Family Residence Barn is not boarded at all; it is one continuous earth floor with a stair rising at the west end. Goods came in without anyone changing footwear, which is the exact opposite of the shoes-on Western entrance a few metres to the south, and the two designs sit on the same plot.
The metal roof reads clearly against the pantiles of the Japanese wing and the storehouse. Light, cheap and easy to replace: the material chosen for a building that works.
Visiting
The Nagase Takao Family Residence Barn stands on private ground and the interior is closed. The owner's introductory site lists no visiting hours and no booking procedure (checked 13 September 2026). Neither the earth floor nor the upper storey can be entered.
Even the exterior is among the hardest of the seven to see. The barn sits north of the Western-style building, toward the back of the plot, so both the east boundary wall and the house itself block the line of sight. A wall runs along the north boundary as well. Expect part of a roof, at best, from the public road.
No notice prohibiting photography was found, but avoid pointing a lens into the depth of the grounds.
Directions to the estate and the conditions for seeing it are set out on the Nagase Takao Family Residence page.
Q&A
- When was the Nagase Takao Family Residence Barn built?
- In the late Taisho era, between 1919 and 1926, which makes it roughly contemporary with the Western-style building of about 1922.
- What is inside the Nagase Takao Family Residence Barn?
- The ground floor is a single earth floor with a stair at the west end. The upper floor was storage, lit by vertical-barred windows on the front.
- What is the canopy on the front of the Nagase Takao Family Residence Barn?
- A lean-to roof one ken deep, roughly 1.8 metres. It is open on all sides except the west end, which is partitioned off as a small room.
