A Village Kabuki Stage in Chichibu
The Tochiya Yasaka Shrine Stage (栃谷八坂神社舞台) is a timber stage for jishibai (village kabuki) built in 1899 in the precinct of Yasaka Shrine at Tochiya, Chichibu City, Saitama Prefecture, in the north of the Chichibu basin, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on September 10, 2019. It was repaired around 1950 and in 2014 (Chichibu City, Agency for Cultural Affairs).
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records it as a single-storey timber building with a tiled roof and a building area of 80 square metres; registration number 11-190, owned by Yasaka Shrine.
A Stage Attached to a Shrine
According to Chichibu City, the stage stands in the open ground on the west side of the precinct, facing east. Jishibai are plays performed by local people themselves, staged at shrines during festivals.
The stage is divided into a front of two ken and a back of three ken, and the back has a movable raised platform (Chichibu City, Agency for Cultural Affairs).
