Guest Halls of Daitsuji

The Daitsuji Temple Ganzanken and Rantei (大通寺含山軒及び蘭亭) are the guest hall Ganzanken and the study hall Rantei of the early Edo period (1615 to 1660) at Daitsuji, the Nagahama branch temple of the Otani school of Shin Buddhism, at Motohama-cho, Nagahama City, Shiga Prefecture, designated an Important Cultural Property on March 26, 1915 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records the Ganzanken as 11.2 by 5.9 metres, single storey, with a stepped gabled roof of pan tiles and shingled pent roofs on the east and north; the Rantei is 13.8 by 9.0 metres, single storey, gabled with pan tiles, with an attached linking room. They are owned by the Honganji Betsuin Daitsuji of the Otani school.

The Guest Rooms of Nagahama Gobo

According to the Biwako Visitors Bureau, Daitsuji, fondly called Nagahama Gobo, is a branch temple of Higashi Honganji that began as a hall inside the old Nagahama Castle. The wall paintings inside the guest rooms of the Ganzanken and Rantei are attributed to Kano Sanraku, Kano Sansetsu and Maruyama Okyo.

Each of the Daitsuji Temple Ganzanken and Rantei has its own garden, and the Ganzanken and Rantei gardens are a national Place of Scenic Beauty. The name Ganzanken, "hall embracing the mountain", comes from the garden's borrowed view of Mount Ibuki (Biwako Visitors Bureau).

Value as an Important Cultural Property

The Daitsuji Temple Ganzanken and Rantei were designated an Important Cultural Property in 1915 together with the main hall and the great hall. They preserve the guest and study halls of an early Edo temple and, with their scenic gardens, crown the halls of Daitsuji (Agency for Cultural Affairs, Biwako Visitors Bureau).

What to Look For

The Ganzanken has a gabled roof stepped at two heights with shingled pent roofs, while the Rantei is a gabled study hall joined to the other buildings by a linking room (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

From the rooms of the Daitsuji Temple Ganzanken and Rantei visitors look out on the dry landscape garden of the Ganzanken, borrowing the view of Mount Ibuki, and the Rantei garden with its arched bridge over a small pond (Biwako Visitors Bureau).

Visiting

According to Daitsuji, the grounds are open from 8:00 to 17:00 and the halls from 10:00 to 16:30 (last entry 16:00; from 9:00 between February 1 and December 20, 2026). Admission to the halls is charged, cash only, and wheelchair visits to the halls must be booked in advance (0749-62-0054).

The Daitsuji Temple Ganzanken and Rantei form the cultural properties of Daitsuji with the main hall, the great hall and the gardens. See the group page Daitsuji Temple (Nagahama Betsuin) for all four. The address is 32-9 Motohama-cho, Nagahama City.
