Two Posts and a Roof, Five Centuries On
Kasuga Shrine Gate (春日神社神門, Kasuga Jinja Shinmon) is a small roofed gate built around 1511 at Kasuga Shrine in Takagi, Yasu City, Shiga Prefecture, and was designated an Important Cultural Property on 7 June 1961.
Takagi is a village in the east of Yasu, about 20 minutes on foot from Shinohara Station on the JR Biwako Line. A shinmon is the gate that marks the threshold of a shrine's sacred ground, and the Kasuga Shrine Gate does exactly that, standing where the approach path enters the precinct.
Accounts of the shrine's founding vary from source to source, and none can be pinned down. The gate itself is the firm fact: a late Muromachi structure still guarding the same entrance.
The Simplest Gate, Done Well
The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives the date as Eishō 8 (1511) and describes the Kasuga Shrine Gate as a modest Munamon: two posts carrying a gabled roof, the plainest of all Japanese gate types, with no bracing posts front or back. Plain as it is, the agency notes that it shows the Muromachi style clearly. Its database entry hedges slightly, recording the date as circa 1511.
The roof is laid in cypress bark. With nothing but posts and roof to work with, the carpenters had only proportion to rely on, and the gate depends on the balance between the two.
Designation came in 1961. On Yasu City's own register of designated properties, it is listed as the most recent of the city's nationally designated buildings.
What to Notice at Kasuga Shrine Gate
With a munamon, the pleasure lies in seeing how few parts are needed. Face the gate and the whole structure is legible at once: two posts, one roof. Now step to the side. With no auxiliary posts, the Kasuga Shrine Gate looks startlingly thin in profile, and the shallowness of the whole thing becomes obvious.
Look at the eaves, where the cut edge of the bark roof shows its many layers. After rain the bark darkens to a deep brown; on a dry day it looks paler and almost soft.
This is not a large gate. Judge its scale against the trees and buildings around it, and the restraint of its builders comes through.
Visiting Kasuga Shrine Gate
The gate stands outdoors and can be seen from outside the precinct. We could find no staffed office, visitor reception or admission fee, and no posted ban on photography. It remains a working village shrine, so keep clear of worshippers and any rites in progress.
The nearest station is Shinohara on the JR Biwako Line. The shrine lies roughly 1.4 kilometres away in a straight line, around 20 minutes on foot, at 652 Takagi. If you plan to drive, confirm parking arrangements before you go.
