A Muromachi Sanctuary Among the Kotō Rice Fields
Kasuga Shrine Main Hall (春日神社本殿, Kasuga Jinja Honden) is the sanctuary of Kasuga Shrine in Koyagi-chō, Higashiōmi City, Shiga Prefecture, a three-bay Nagare-zukuri hall built in 1444 in the mid-Muromachi period and designated an Important Cultural Property on 17 April 1911.
Koyagi is a farming village in the east of Higashiōmi, in the flat rice country east of Lake Biwa known as Kotō. The shrine stands toward the north-eastern edge of the settlement and is said to enshrine a deity shared from Kasuga Taisha in Nara. Locally it also goes by the name Yama-no-kami, the mountain deity.
The designation covers more than the building. A single Munafuda, a wooden ridge tag of the kind carpenters nailed up to record a construction, is protected alongside it as an attached item.
Why Kasuga Shrine Main Hall Is Protected
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records the hall as three-bay nagare-zukuri with a one-bay Kōhai porch and a roof of cypress bark, and dates it to Bun'an 1, or 1444.
Nagare-zukuri, the flowing style, is a gabled roof whose front slope is drawn out long enough to shelter the steps and porch. It is the most widespread form of shrine sanctuary in Japan. A three-bay hall has three openings across the front, which gives it a broader, more substantial presence than the common one-bay type.
National designation followed in 1911. A firm construction date, backed by a ridge tag kept within the same designation, gives Kasuga Shrine Main Hall particular value as a dated example of mid-Muromachi shrine building.
How to Look at the Hall
Start at the side. Seen in profile, the roof is short at the back and long at the front, sweeping down and out over the entrance. That lopsided silhouette is the whole idea of nagare-zukuri, and it is far easier to grasp from the flank than from straight on.
At the front, look at how the single-bay porch projects from the middle of the three bays. The gap between the porch posts and the posts of the hall proper is what creates the deep shadow under the cypress-bark eaves.
The precinct also holds a shrine gate designated by Shiga Prefecture. After studying the hall, take in the whole layout from gate to sanctuary.
Visiting Kasuga Shrine Main Hall
The interior of Kasuga Shrine Main Hall is not open, so the visit is to the exterior. We found no staffed office, reception or admission fee, and no posted restriction on photography. This is a village shrine in regular use, so keep out of the way of worshippers and festivals.
The address is 763 Koyagi-chō. The nearest railway station, Echigawa on the JR Biwako Line, is more than 4 kilometres away in a straight line, so a taxi or car is the practical option.
