A Late Kamakura Shrine Hall with a Front Room
The Namura Shrine West Main Hall (苗村神社西本殿) is the late Kamakura west main hall of Namura Shrine at Ayado, Ryuo Town, Gamo District, Shiga Prefecture, which in 1955 was designated a National Treasure.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a three-bay nagare-style shrine with a one-bay porch and cypress-bark roof, designated with its inner shrine cabinet and a ridge tag.
The Agency notes that a ridge tag records a founding in 1217 and construction in 1308, and that its style agrees with a rebuilding at that time.
Form
According to the Agency, the front porch area of the three-bay nagare-style hall has a floor set a step lower and lattice between the posts to form a front room, with a further one-bay porch in front, a form also found elsewhere in Shiga.
The core has round posts with boat-shaped bracket arms and a forked-strut gable; besides the central front doors there is a single door on the right side. The front room and porch have square posts with three-bearing brackets, chamfered members and a frog-leg strut at the centre.
What to Look For
The Agency notes that its style throughout shows late Kamakura qualities, the frog-leg struts being especially beautiful. It was substantially repaired in 1476 and later, but a dismantling repair in 1957 and 1958 restored most of its original form.
The shrine cabinet inside, small and simple with a gabled board roof, is finely made and thought to be of the same period as the hall.
