A Modest Gate with a Long Fence
The Omi Hino Merchant Museum (Former Yamanaka Hyoemon Family Residence) Front Gate (近江日野商人館（旧山中兵右衛門家住宅）表門) is the main gate of the Hino home of the merchant Yamanaka Hyoemon in Okubo, Hino, Shiga Prefecture; it was built around 1936 and registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 16 January 1998. It now serves as the entrance to the Omi Hino Merchant Museum.
It is a wooden Munamon, a simple gate type in which a single gabled roof sits on 2 posts, finished here in tile. The national register lists 2 attachments with it: a small stone bridge in front, and roofed board fences running off to left and right for a combined 47 metres. What was registered, in effect, is the whole street frontage of the Former Yamanaka Hyoemon Family Residence, not just the gate.
Why It Was Kept Low
The Front Gate of the Former Yamanaka Hyoemon Family Residence was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs draws attention to where it stands and how tall it is.
The gate sits south of the Shikidai, the formal entrance porch on the west side of the main house's façade, drawn back slightly from the road. Its roof is deliberately lower than the ground-floor eaves of the main house, and the Agency reads this as a calculated visual effect. From the street, the tiled roofs of the house rise in layers behind the low gate and fence, giving the frontage a sense of depth.
The Hino Tourist Association says the house makes no show of wealth on its street side and instead reflects a strict, frugal way of life. A low gate and a plain board fence do more than anything else here to create that impression.
How to Look at the Gate
Begin across the road. From there you can take in the Omi Hino Merchant Museum Front Gate, the full run of the fence on either side and the roofline of the main house behind, all at once, and the height relationship the Agency describes is easier to see than it is close up.
Then look down at the little stone bridge, which is part of the registration. It marks a small threshold in the few steps between road and gate. Once through, the entrance porch is straight ahead, and you can see that gate and porch were laid out on a single line.
