Shojukan Shinryo
Shojukan Shinryo is an ancillary building of 1933 in Tatsutachō, Gokashō, Higashiōmi City, Shiga Prefecture, entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 4 February 2021. Single-storey timber construction with a tiled roof and a building area of 26 square metres, it adjoins the southern side of the earth-floored work area of the main house.
Among the thirteen buildings, this is the only one whose register entry states outright that its purpose is unknown. There is a single room of twelve tatami mats, and no record survives of what went on in it.
One Room, Purpose Unrecorded
The room at Shojukan Shinryo is long on the north-south axis. Its ceiling is divided into two equal halves along that axis, each treated as a two-tier surface imitating a coved coffered ceiling. Coved coffering properly belongs to temple sanctuaries and to the raised chambers of castles. Reproducing it, twice, in an outbuilding of this size is a conspicuous amount of effort.
The second clue is on the west wall. A sink projects one bay out from the wall face, and four taps sit along it in a row. Four taps are not fittings for one person. In 1933 they would also have been recent: mains water had not long reached villages of this kind.
A ceiling of high formal rank and a wet area built for several people at once, in the same small room. Whether it served as a preparation space for banquets or as a waiting room for guests, the register declines to say, recording only that Shojukan Shinryo forms part of the estate. It is a building where what is known and what is not are unusually cleanly separated.
What to Look For
Look up. Splitting one room's ceiling into two north-south halves and stepping each of them is not a common solution. Stand on the dividing line and the change in ceiling height is directly visible.
Then examine the sink on the west side. Because it projects from the wall, it reads from the room like a shelf. The four taps run in a single horizontal line.
Finally, set the room size against the footprint. Shojukan Shinryo covers 26 square metres, which is very nearly the twelve mats themselves. There is no corridor and no anteroom; you enter directly from the earth floor of the main house next door.
Visiting
Because Shojukan Shinryo opens off the earth floor of the main house, visitors see it as a continuation of the main house tour while the Merchant Museum, Kyōrinbō Betsuin is open. The Higashiōmi City Tourism Association places the flush toilet said to be the oldest made in Japan in this part of the estate. Openings are weekends and public holidays in spring and autumn only.
Photography is permitted. The stepped ceiling flattens out under even light, so the dividing line reads best when the window side is bright. Directions and admission details are on the Shojukan page.
