One Room, Its Own Building
The Tozanso Detached Wing (東山荘離れ, Tōzansō Hanare) is a single-story wooden reception pavilion at the northern edge of the Tozanso grounds in Kasugacho, Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture, built around 1935 and placed on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 1, 2016. Its ridge runs east to west, and a covered passage links it to the main house.
It was built for Ishii Kengo, president of Dai-Ichi Bank and the villa's first owner. The main gate, main house and storage shed had gone up in 1933 under the contractor Shimizu-gumi; this pavilion followed a little later. Since the shipping owner Yamashita Kamesaburo took over in 1939 and Okada Mokichi of the Church of World Messianity in 1944, the Tozanso Detached Wing belongs firmly to the Ishii years.
At 47 square meters it is small. A reception room of about fifteen mats takes up most of that, with an entrance and little else attached. In other words, a whole separate building was raised to house one room for receiving guests.
Why It Was Registered
The Tozanso Detached Wing was registered as number 22-0225 under the criterion of being a model of design. Only three of the seven structures here were entered on that ground, this pavilion together with the annex and the tea house. It is a listing about quality of design rather than about townscape.
What earned it that reading is the way traditional carpentry and the new domestic fashions of the 1930s sit together in a single room without friction. The finish follows teahouse-derived practice, yet the furnishing edges toward a more Western way of living. The structure is wood, single-story, roofed in tile with copper over part of the surface.
Ceilings and Logs
The ceiling is the first thing to look at. Over the middle of the reception room it takes the funazoko form, rising in the center and sloping down to either side like the underside of an upturned boat. Around that central field the surface changes to an Ajiro-tenjō, a woven panel of thin split strips laid on the diagonal. One room, two ceiling treatments.
Logs of several different species appear in the posts, beams and eaves. Bark stripped away, each one differs in color and girth from the next, and sitting on the floor and looking up makes it clear the variety was chosen rather than accepted. The work follows Sukiya-zukuri convention while leaning hard toward showing the material itself.
The other thing to notice is a long seat that projects like a bay window. Bringing a fixed bench into a matted room is close to the sensibility of the Western-style rooms spreading through Japanese houses in the mid-1930s. Into an otherwise quiet traditional interior, one current of contemporary domestic life has been let in.
The covered passage to the main house means the Tozanso Detached Wing could be used without crossing the garden, which mattered on wet days.
Visiting
Access to the Tozanso Detached Wing runs through the preservation society's booking system, and there is no walk-in option. Opening days are Sundays only, normally the third of the month and the fourth in March, May, August and November. In 2026 nothing is scheduled for July or December.
Each opening day has two departures, 11:00 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., capped at ten visitors. The fee of 1,000 yen is settled at the desk. A guide walks the group around the grounds in something close to an hour. Requests go by email to the society, listing who is coming, how to reach you, and the date and time preferred; sessions close as they fill.
The published material does not address photography anywhere, which makes it a question for the guide.
The station is JR Atami, roughly ten minutes away on foot to the southeast and uphill throughout. Nothing on the site is set aside for cars, so a paid car park in the town centre serves instead. Sitting on the northern boundary, this pavilion tends to be shown next to the residence.
