Daiichi Shuzo

Daiichi Shuzo is a sake brewery in Tajimacho, Sano City, Tochigi Prefecture, whose brewery storehouse, office, former barrel store, former granary and former rice storehouse were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on November 29, 2016 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The oldest is the former rice storehouse of 1864, and the brewery storehouse dates from around 1868 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The Agency notes that the storehouse keeps the scene of the site as it has been since the late Edo period.

The Five Buildings

The brewery storehouse in the north-west corner is a large storehouse 39 metres long where the main steps of brewing take place (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The office joins its south side at the east end; it first held a counting room and a boiler room, with quarters upstairs for the master brewer.

The former barrel store in the north-east corner has a back gate under a hip-and-gabled roof in its north lean-to (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The former granary is a gatehouse on the street, and with the former rice storehouse it forms the south front of the site. Each is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property and is covered on its own page.

Visiting

No official information on visiting the brewery was found. The former granary and rice storehouse face the street and can be seen from outside.
