The Wall Along the Old Highway
Running the length of the Tanuma plot's northern edge, right along the old Nikkō Reiheishi Kaidō in Shimada-chō, Ashikaga, is a long timber wall. It stretches some 84 meters in total, carries a gable roof laid in pantile, and dates to 1935. Along with the main house, gate, storehouse, and Inari shrine, it forms part of the Tanuma property protected as registered cultural property.
This is a shinkabe wall, built with its posts left exposed rather than plastered over, its lower section clad in sasarako board siding. Where the main house speaks of Edo-period roots and the gate of formal ceremony, the outer wall does quieter work: it draws the line between the household's world and the public road, and it holds the street's historic face intact.
Part of a Registered Whole
The outer wall entered Japan's register of tangible cultural properties on 3 August 2006, under the criterion for structures that contribute to the national historic landscape (registration number 09-0148). It was registered together with the other Tanuma buildings, valued not for itself alone but for the streetscape it helps compose along the old highway.
Its measurements are precise. Along the north face, the bays measure 1.4 meters on the eastern stretch and 1.2 meters on the western, each standing 2.2 meters tall. Near the center the wall folds south, then meets the northern end of the wing walls that flank the front gate. Wall and gate were designed to work as one continuous barrier, presenting an unbroken, dignified frontage to travelers on the road.
Reading the Streetscape
Walls rarely draw a second glance, yet this one repays it. Follow its line from the road and you can see how a wealthy family framed its estate: the exposed-post construction, the board-clad base, the steady rhythm of the bays, and the turn south that ties the wall into the gate. It is the connective tissue that makes the Tanuma frontage read as a single, considered composition rather than a set of separate buildings.
The residence is private and not open to the public, but the wall and gate can be seen from the roadside, where they preserve a stretch of the old Reiheishi Kaidō much as it once looked. Visitors wanting to explore historic streets on foot will find Ashikaga's older quarters, around the Ashikaga School and Banna-ji, open and easy to walk a short drive to the west.
