Jorokuji Temple

Jorokuji Temple (丈六寺) in Jorokucho, Tokushima City, Tokushima Prefecture, has a main hall of 1629 built as the abbot's quarters, a Kannon hall of 1648 and a late Muromachi main gate designated as an Important Cultural Property in 1953, and a former monks' hall of 1644, now the sutra repository, designated in 1998 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

All four have roofs of full tiles. The Agency record has no commentary for them; the structure, date and ridge tablets designated with each set out what was designated.

The Four Buildings

The oldest, the main gate, is a two-storey gate of three bays and three passages with a hip-and-gable roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs). The main hall was originally the abbot's quarters, a hip-and-gable building 18.7 by 11.8 metres.

The Kannon hall, three bays by four, has two tiers of hipped roof, and the sutra repository, originally a monks' hall, is a hipped building five bays by three fitted with an octagonal revolving sutra case (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Seventeen ridge tablets in all are designated with the four. Each building is described on its own page.
