Otanigawa Embankment: A Dutch Engineer's Living Legacy on the Yoshino River

Tucked into the foothills of the Sanuki Mountains in Tokushima Prefecture, a gently curving wall of dressed stone crosses the Otanigawa, a tributary of the mighty Yoshino River. In early April, some 15,000 tulips of around fourteen varieties come into bloom alongside cherry blossoms, and the annual Tulip Festival draws visitors from across the region.
