What Is the Yamashita Family Residence Front Gate?

The Yamashita Family Residence Front Gate (山下家住宅表門, Yamashita-ke Jūtaku Omotemon) is a timber gate built around 1899 in Tsuji, Ikawa-cho, Miyoshi City, Tokushima Prefecture, and was entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on October 27, 2017. It faces the old road through Tsuji and stands against the west side of the main house.

It is a munamon, a simple gate with a single ridged roof on two posts, 1.5 meters wide, with walls running out to either side. Gate and walls are both roofed in hongawara tiles. Built at about the same time as the main house, the Yamashita Front Gate forms one continuous street front with it.

A Gate Made Entirely of Keyaki

The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the Yamashita Family Residence Front Gate a fine gate built wholly of keyaki, the Japanese zelkova. Keyaki is hard, strongly figured and stands up to weather, which is why carpenters favored it for gates that take rain and sun head-on.

At 1.5 meters the opening is wide enough for a person, not a cart. This was a gate for receiving guests and presenting the house to the street, not a service entrance for goods.

What to Look For on the Front Gate

Look up above the doorway. Set into the space is a ranma transom panel carved in openwork with a pine tree, cut right through the board so light shows between the branches. Almost all the decoration of the Yamashita Front Gate is concentrated in this one panel.

The flanking walls are worth a second look. Their lower part is sheathed in narrow sasarako shitamiita, horizontal clapboards held down by thin notched battens, and the upper part is earthen plaster. Boards below to take the splash and plaster above is a pairing you will see on town-house walls all over the region.

Why the Front Gate Was Registered

The Yamashita Front Gate was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency notes that this high-quality keyaki gate helps form the streetscape.

The July 2017 recommendation describes the main house as connected to the front gate and a north wall. That north wall does not appear in the Agency's database today. The Yamashita Family Residence Front Gate remains, with the main house, the face the property shows to the road.

Seeing the Yamashita Family Residence Front Gate

Because it stands on the road, the Yamashita Family Residence Front Gate can be seen from outside, and the carved pine is visible if you stand in front of it. No access beyond the gate has been announced, and there is no official guidance on photography (checked October 2026). If you photograph it, please keep the inside of the property out of the frame. Directions to Tsuji are on the Yamashita Family Residence (Miyoshi) page.
