The West Gate, Paired with the Treasure House
The Kanda Shrine West Gate (神田神社西門, Kanda Jinja Nishimon) is the reinforced-concrete gate of 1934 joined to the south side of the treasure house on the west flank of the shrine buildings of Kanda Shrine (Kanda Myōjin) in Sotokanda, Chiyoda City, Tokyo, and it was entered on the national register as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 19 September 2003. The gate is 1.8 metres wide and comes with 14 metres of angled low fencing.
On the west side of the precinct, to the left as you face the worship hall, stands the vermilion building of the shrine museum; the Kanda Shrine West Gate lies between that museum and the halls. It was never meant as a way into the grounds. Its role is to partition the west face of the composite sanctuary.
Why the West Gate Was Registered
The Kanda Shrine West Gate carries registration number 13-0156, the last in the run of eight. It was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape, and the Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as essential, together with the worship hall and the treasure house, to the front and side composition of the sanctuary.
It is the twin of the east gate, and the two official descriptions are worded almost identically. The difference is the neighbour. The east gate attaches to the shinsenjo; the Kanda Shrine West Gate connects to the south end of the treasure house through a board fence resembling a side screen. Its outer face stands on a raised base, the doorway occupies the second bay from the north and holds a pair of Sankarado paneled doors, and low fencing of the same type as the northern half of the complex runs one bay north and, after a right-angle turn, five bays south to the side of the worship hall.
With the main hall at the centre, the shinsenjo and east gate sit on one side and the treasure house and west gate on the other. That symmetry frames the gongen-zukuri core from both flanks, and the west gate completes its western half.
What to Look For
From the front of the worship hall, bear left, westward, and the Kanda Shrine West Gate appears just ahead of the treasure house. If you have already seen the east gate, the effect is of a mirror image, the same gate built again in reverse. Comparing the two sides is one of the quickest ways to understand how the whole group was designed.
Behind the gate rises the small log-walled treasure house, its hip-and-gable roof layered over the lower roof of the gate, a different silhouette from the pairing on the east side. South of the gate the low fence turns sharply toward the worship hall and closes the west side of the sanctuary in a single line.
The paneled sankarado doors, a frame of stiles and rails with thin boards set in, are a type long used for temple and shrine gates and hall fronts. At 1.8 metres wide this is a small gate, yet with its pair of leaves it keeps the full bearing of a formal entrance.
Visiting the West Gate
The Kanda Shrine West Gate is seen from the grounds. Beyond it is the enclosure around the halls, and there is no indication that visitors may pass through. Standing on the museum side and looking across at the west face of the sanctuary shows the gate, its fencing and the treasure house together.
The shrine gives no photography rules specific to the gate. Directions and general visiting information are on the Kanda Shrine page.
