Ontake Shrine

Ontake Shrine (御嶽神社) in Kitaminemachi, Ota Ward, Tokyo, has an ablution hall of around 1867, a shrine office of 1930 and the Issan Shrine Soreisha of 1899, an auxiliary shrine, registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on February 25, 2016 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). All three are owned by the shrine.

According to the Ota City bulletin, the small shrine from which it grew is said to have been built in 1535, and in 1831 a shrine building said to be the first branch in the Kanto region of Mount Ontake in Kiso was raised; the ascetic Issan found the small shrine here, built the shrine buildings and spread the Ontake faith.

The Three Buildings

The Suigyodo is a small hall with a well for purification with cold water, decorated with cusped windows and a carved dragon transom. The shrine office has an entrance with a curved gable and a reception room of fine woods under a coved ceiling, a fine piece of modern Japanese-style building. The Issan Shrine Soreisha, enshrining the founder Issan, has a main hall projecting in a T from its worship hall (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each is described on its own page.
