About the Takahashi Family Residence Front Gate
The Takahashi Family Residence Front Gate (髙橋家住宅表門, Takahashi-ke Jūtaku Omotemon) is an estate gate of the Meiji era (1868 to 1912) in Shimohoya 3-chome, Nishitokyo City, Tokyo, and was entered on Japan's register of Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on March 27, 2018. It is a single-bay Yakuimon under a gabled roof sheathed in copper, the style known as Dōban-buki, with a short Sodobei wing wall on each side.
The gate stands south of the main house and forms the formal entrance to the property. The dwelling lies beyond it at the back of the plot, which makes the gate the face the Takahashi estate shows to the outside world. It was repaired around 1955.
How a Yakuimon Gate Works
A yakuimon rests on four posts. Two main posts carry the doors, and two slimmer back posts stand behind them to steady the roof. The gable roof is set forward over the main posts, so from the road you mostly see those posts and the deep overhang above them. The type was used for samurai houses and temples, and also by prosperous farming and merchant families.
The Takahashi Front Gate has one bay closed by a pair of board doors that swing open in the middle. Wing walls run out to left and right, so the gate reads less as a freestanding structure and more as the center of a frontage that screens the estate.
