A Bell Tower in the Medieval Manner

The Daisenji Temple Bell Tower (大山寺鐘楼) is a bell tower of 1950 in Daisen, Daisen Town, Saihaku District, Tottori Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on October 27, 2017 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a timber structure with a copper roof, covering 11 square metres; registration number 31-239.

A Bell Tower beside the Main Hall

The Daisenji Bell Tower stands west of the main hall, facing north: one bay square, single-storey, under a gabled copper roof (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Its posts lean slightly inward on a stone platform and are tied by three levels of tie beams (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Large bearing blocks on the posts carry carved bracket arms crossed in a cross, which support the purlins and the curved tie beams.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency notes that, like the main hall, it is based on medieval style with modern features, and registered it for its contribution to the historic landscape.

What to Look For

Look for the inward-leaning posts and the carved bracket arms crossed at right angles (Agency for Cultural Affairs).
