What the Gate Is
Kayashima Shrine Zuishin Gate is the entrance gate of a village shrine in Hiezu, Tottori Prefecture, rebuilt in 1900 and listed as Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2 November 2018. Timber, single storey, copper roof, 12 square metres.
It stands across the approach at the front of the precinct, facing south: a three-bay gate with a single doorway, carried on eight posts. Only the central bay is a passage. The flanking bays house guardian figures, latticed towards the doorway and boarded on the other three sides, so the figures are seen through the lattice from outside.
The roof is gabled. The gable is filled with a curved beam carrying a bottle-shaped strut, and a turnip-shaped pendant hangs at the point of the barge boards. Kayashima Shrine Zuishin Gate is wide and shallow, spreading sideways across the path. Repairs followed in 1976 and 2005.
Why It Was Listed
The registration number is 31-0265, the last of the eight consecutive numbers given to the precinct. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes the gate as the core of the view at the front of the shrine.
It is the first building a visitor meets, and beyond it the Kagura Hall and the Treasury face each other across the path. All three came out of the 1900 works, with Kayashima Shrine Zuishin Gate placed to close the composition at the front. Broad frontage against shallow depth is the proportion of a screen set across a view rather than of a structure meant mainly to be walked through.
Zuishin are the guardian deities of a gate, and a gate that houses their images takes its name from them. On the reading, the Agency's database gives Zuishinmon, while Hiezu Village writes Zuijinmon; both are in use.
What to Look For
The gable is where the work is. A curved beam spans it, a bottle-shaped strut rises from the beam to take the ridge, and the turnip-shaped pendant hangs at the apex. The gate is not tall, so a few steps back brings the whole gable into view and the assembly can be followed by eye.
The guardian figures are seen through lattice. Straight on, reflection often gets in the way; standing at an angle brings the outlines out.
The central bay is wide and open. Stand under it facing north and the Kagura Hall and the Treasury line up along the path with the worship hall behind them, which is the one position where the whole layout can be taken in at once. Beside Kayashima Shrine Zuishin Gate is a stone pillar inscribed as a national registered property, with the listed buildings named on its side.
Visiting
The central bay of Kayashima Shrine Zuishin Gate is open as a passage, and visitors enter the precinct through it. The flanking bays cannot be entered, and the guardian figures are viewed through the lattice.
To photograph the gate, walk a little back down the approach to a square-on position; it is wide enough that a close shot will not hold it. The gable needs an upward angle.
