The Older of Two Storehouses

The Kanasaku Family Residence East Storehouse (金作家住宅東土蔵) is a clay-walled storehouse of 1895 in Uchimen, Takaoka City, Toyama Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 1, 2016 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a two-storey clay-walled storehouse with a tiled roof and a building area of 39 square metres; registration number 16-0118.

A Storehouse Facing the House

The Kanasaku Family Residence East Storehouse stands behind the main house, across a garden (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Its doorway opens on the east side, facing the house, sheltered by a small lean-to roof.

The roof over its main body is shared with the West Storehouse built against its back, laid over both like a single protective cover (Agency for Cultural Affairs). In effect the two storehouses wear one detached roof, set over the clay-walled bodies, and the East Storehouse is the front half.

Why It Was Registered

The Agency registered the Kanasaku Family Residence East Storehouse as a model of design, singling out the treatment of its doorway.

The door is framed by a torii-waku, a gate-like frame, with mock beam ends (harigata) extended to either side, and below those beams the wall flanking the door is finished in black plaster (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

What to Look For

The doorway on the east side is the thing to see: the torii-waku frame, the mock beams reaching out to either side, and the black plaster beneath them (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The West Storehouse behind it is described as plain, with almost no decoration on its walls, which makes the care lavished on the Kanasaku Family Residence East Storehouse door all the clearer.

Visiting

The Kanasaku Family Residence East Storehouse stands within a private property, behind the main house beyond the garden (Agency for Cultural Affairs). No official information on public access or visits was found as of October 2026.
