A Riveted Steel Arch in Central Toyama

The Sakurabashi Bridge (桜橋) is a steel arch bridge completed in 1935 over the Matsu River between Honmachi and Sakurabashi-dori, Toyama City, Toyama Prefecture, which in 1999 was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single steel arch 16 metres long and 22 metres wide, owned by Toyama Prefecture and registered for its contribution to the historic landscape.

Toyama Prefecture notes that it was the first bridge in the prefecture to be registered.

Structure

According to the Agency, it is a two-hinged steel arch over the Matsu River, dug as part of Toyama's city planning from 1928 to make use of the former bed of the Jinzu River.

It was built as a wide skew bridge to follow the line of the road.

What to Look For

The Agency notes its modernity in city planning terms. Toyama Prefecture says it was built by the prefectural city planning project, like the Fugan Canal, and is highly regarded as a riveted steel arch with a beautiful silhouette that shows the historic townscape of the city centre.

The prefecture adds that trams as well as people and cars cross it.

Visiting the Sakurabashi Bridge

Sakurabashi is a working road bridge and can be seen at any time. Toyama Prefecture notes it is close to the Sakurabashi tram stop of the Toyama Chiho Railway.
