Ichiki Ryokan

An Inn on the Road to Chōhōji

Ichiki Ryokan (一木旅館, Ichiki Ryokan) is a group of inn buildings on the pilgrims' road to Chōhōji temple in Kami, Shimotsu-cho, Kainan City, Wakayama Prefecture, combining a late Edo-period town house with buildings added around 1937; five of its structures were registered together as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on June 29, 2022. Locally it goes by Ryōri Ryokan Ichiki, "the Ichiki dining inn."

Local press reports put its founding in 1887. Over the following century the rooms took in former prime ministers and well-known writers and performers, and the tatami halls hosted company negotiations, business entertaining, village weddings and school reunions. The family that runs it says discretion about who sat at its tables has always been part of the house style.

Its position only makes sense in relation to the temple up the road. Chōhōji is the family temple of the Kishū branch of the Tokugawa clan, and its medieval main hall, great gate and two-storied Tahōtō pagoda hold the highest rank of national designation. The road runs from the old town of Shimotsu to that gate. Ichiki Ryokan occupies the north side of it about halfway along, presenting a gate and a long plastered wall to passers-by, with the low eaves of the Main Building just to the east. The Miya River runs behind the lot.

An Edo Town House with Shōwa Wings

The oldest structure on the site is the Main Building. The Agency for Cultural Affairs dates it to the late Edo period as a machiya, or merchant town house, remodeled in the early Shōwa era. Put the dates side by side and it becomes clear that the inn grew inside a house that was already standing before the business began.

The big change came around 1937. According to the Wakayama Prefectural Board of Education, the Entrance Building, the New Building and the gate and wall were built at about that time, while the Old Building, a late Meiji-period structure, was moved onto the site. The Entrance Building was altered again around 1955. Where the Old Building originally stood is not recorded in any published source we could find.

The result is a single compound holding buildings from three periods: late Edo, late Meiji and early Shōwa. All five were registered on the same day under consecutive numbers, 30-0320 through 30-0324, and all under the same criterion: that they contribute to the historic landscape of the country.

What gives the ensemble its interest is the pairing of an old street-front town house with the quieter, sukiya-style guest wings behind it. The Agency's own notes single out the Old Building and the New Building as deliberate opposites in finish and mood.

Reading the Compound from the Gate Inward

You enter through a small roofed gate set into the wall along the road. Glossy black Nachiguro stones are pressed into the ground beneath it, and a stone-paved path leads across a front garden to the Entrance Building at the back. Every route through Ichiki Ryokan passes through that building.

From the Entrance Building a corridor runs east to the Main Building and west to the Old Building, and a covered bridge leads north to the New Building at the very rear, where each guest room has a wide veranda overlooking the Miya River. The layout reads like a timeline: oldest at the street, newest at the back.

From the public road you can see the gate and wall, the eaves of the Main Building and the upper floor of the Old Building rising above the wall. The Entrance Building and the New Building sit inside the compound and are largely hidden from the street.

Visiting Ichiki Ryokan

Ichiki Ryokan no longer takes overnight guests; the Wakayama Prefectural Board of Education describes it as a former inn now used as a restaurant. After about 5 years closed, it reopened for lunch on October 30, 2020, according to regional news reports. At that time lunch ran from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., with Wednesdays and Thursdays closed, but days and hours may have changed since, so contact the restaurant directly before you go.

The interiors can be seen only by dining there. We found no announcements of public or special openings as of September 2026. Which rooms you are shown depends on the booking, so if a particular building matters to you, ask when you reserve.

The gate, the wall and the front of the Main Building can be viewed freely from the road. We could find no published photography policy; when photographing the exterior, keep in mind that this is also a residential street and a working business, and ask the staff before taking pictures indoors.

The nearest station is Shimotsu on the JR Kisei Line. Allow roughly 20 minutes on foot, heading east toward Chōhōji. Note that Chōhōji itself has been closed to visitors while repairs continue after a landslide caused by heavy rain in June 2023, according to Kainan City as of April 2026.
