A Plank Storehouse of 1865

The Okazaki Family Residence (Former Kurisu Family Residence) Storehouse (岡﨑家住宅(旧栗須家住宅)蔵) is a storehouse for household goods of 1865 in Takata, Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 15, 2024 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency records a timber building of 2 storeys with a sheet-iron roof and a building area of 22 square metres, renovated around 1998; registration number 30-0370.

A Small Storehouse Walled in Planks

The Okazaki Family Residence Storehouse stands on raised ground in the southeast corner of the plot and faces north (Agency for Cultural Affairs). It is a gabled building of 2 storeys entered at the gable end, with walls of timber planks rather than earth plaster; the roof is now sheet iron.

The doorway sits toward the west of the front under a small canopy. On the ground floor a strip half a bay deep at the north end forms an earth-floored vestibule; otherwise each floor is a single boarded room, and the roof is framed with sloping rafter beams (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

Why It Was Registered

The Agency calls the Okazaki Family Residence Storehouse a small but valuable plank storehouse from the days of cedar-bark roofing that shapes the southeast corner of the homestead, and it was registered for its contribution to the historic landscape. The Council for Cultural Affairs, in its recommendation of March 15, 2024, also noted the stout timbers used despite its size.

What to Look For

Set on higher ground, the storehouse closes the southeast corner of the homestead (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Look for the canopy over the doorway toward the west of the front and the heavy timbers of the plank walls.

Visiting

The Okazaki Family Residence Storehouse stands within a private homestead, and no interior opening is announced. It occupies the southeast corner of the plot, near the gap in the east side of the stone wall; stay outside the property and view it only from the road.
