What the Sono Family Residence Katahei Wall Is

The Sono Family Residence Katahei Wall (薗家住宅片塀, Sono-ke Jūtaku Katahei) is a late Edo-period single-storey timber wall enclosing the east side of the Sono family estate, home of former shipping merchants in Sono, Gobo City, Wakayama Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 15 August 2024. It is a long wall that doubles as a store, with a building area of 84 square metres.

The wall runs north from the south storehouse on the east side of the plot, turns west at the north-east corner and meets the east storehouse. In plan it is an L, linking the storehouses along the north edge to the south storehouse on the east and closing off the east side of the inner yard. Its official address is given as 691 Shinmachi, Sono, but it stands on the same plot as the other six structures.

It is a narrow single-storey range 1 ken deep, roofed in Hongawarabuki tiling in the asymmetrical Maneki-yane form. Although it is a wall, it has a roof and floor area, which is why it is counted as a building in its own right.

Why It Was Registered

The criterion is contribution to the historic landscape. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as a long wall that gives the estate its presence. Only with the Katahei wall do the three buildings on the north side and the south storehouse on the east become one continuous enclosure; of the seven structures, it is the one that ties the others together and closes the outline of the estate.

Its use as a store matters just as much. The southern end, a bay 2 ken long and 1 and a half ken deep, is a pickling room, and toward the south the yard side is left open as a work area without walls. Outward it is the estate's boundary; inward it is storage and working space, a building that supported a merchant household from behind the scenes.

The roof has its own character. A maneki-yane has two slopes of unequal length on either side of the ridge, so it looks close to a single pitch. Set on a range only 1 ken deep, it gives the wall a clearly high side and a clearly low side.

What to Look For

The outer face of the Sono Family Residence Katahei Wall is clad in vertical boards. That long run of timber is the face the estate turns to the outside world, quite unlike the white plastered storehouses that line the yard within.

Look too at the corner of the L. Where the wall turns at the north-east corner it runs straight into the east end of the east storehouse, so storehouse and wall join without a gap, and the hongawarabuki roofline carries on from one to the other. It is a sign that the enclosure was planned as a whole.

Visiting

The Katahei Wall is part of a private home, and the grounds are not open (checked 24 September 2026). The pickling room and the open work area are on the inside of the estate and cannot be seen.

The vertically boarded outer face looks outward from the property. Enjoy it from where it can be seen and please do not look over the wall into the grounds.

Directions to the estate and general visiting conditions are on the Sono Family Residence page.
