What the Tenman Shrine Tower Gate is

The Tenman Shrine Tower Gate (天満神社楼門, Tenman Jinja Rōmon) is the 1605 two-storey entrance gate of Tenman Shrine, popularly Wakaura Tenmangū, in Wakaura, Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture, and it was designated an Important Cultural Property on May 13, 1935.

A rōmon is a gate with an upper storey but no roof over the lower one; instead the upper floor is ringed by a balcony and railing. The Agency for Cultural Affairs records the Tenman Shrine Tower Gate as a one-bay, single-passage rōmon with an Irimoya-zukuri hip-and-gable roof in Hongawarabuki clay tile. Four thick round pillars, painted vermilion, carry the whole structure.

Asano Yoshinaga, lord of Kii, built it as part of his rebuilding of the shrine after it burned in 1585, and the gate was finished a year before the main hall. It stands on a retaining wall of local blue-green stone at the top of a steep flight of steps, with roofed corridors running off to the east and west.

Why the Tenman Shrine Tower Gate is an Important Cultural Property

What Wakayama City points to is a mismatch between the two levels. The ground floor is only one bay wide, yet it carries an upper storey three bays wide and two deep. Narrow below, broad above: the city calls the arrangement unusual and praises the gate as a handsome design that draws on the Zenshūyō Zen temple style throughout.

The newsletter of the Wakayama Society of Architects and Building Engineers describes the Tenman Shrine Tower Gate as the largest gate of its one-bay, single-passage type in Japan, and notes that its eaves use Ōgidaruki fan rafters, another Zen-style feature. The building work is attributed to Heinouchi Yoshimasa and his son Masanobu, who later became master builder to the Tokugawa shogunate.

The gate was designated on May 13, 1935, separately from the main hall, which had been designated in 1916.

What to look for at the Tenman Shrine Tower Gate

From the foot of the steps the Tenman Shrine Tower Gate seems to float above its stone wall. The slim lower storey and the wide upper one read best from down here, looking up, so pause before you start climbing.

Once you stand beneath it, look up at the underside of the eaves. In fan rafters the rafters are not laid parallel; toward each corner they spread out like the ribs of a folding fan. Compare the corners and the pattern of the Zen-style eaves becomes clear.

Then walk through and turn around. As the shrine says, the pillars frame Wakaura Bay, the Kataonami sand spit and the Fujishiro hills like a picture. Only from this side does it become obvious that the gate was built to face the sea.

Visiting the Tenman Shrine Tower Gate

The Tenman Shrine Tower Gate is the way into the shrine, so anyone can walk through it during worship hours, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., free of charge. No opening of the upper storey is announced.

The corridors attached to the gate have begun to lean, and on June 15, 2026 the shrine started temporary seismic bracing on the west corridor, so supports may be visible beside the gate. A later phase of the restoration is planned to repaint the gate in vermilion, but no date has been set.

The shrine publishes no rules on photography. If you stop on the steps or under the gate for a picture, keep to the side so that others can pass. Directions to the precinct are on the Tenman Shrine (Wakayama) page.
