Tools and Dairy Cows Under One Ridge
The Former Matsuoka Family Residence Work Shed and Cowshed (旧松岡家住宅作業小屋及び牛舎, Kyū Matsuoka-ke Jūtaku Sagyō-goya oyobi Gyūsha) is a farm outbuilding of 1908 in Utamaru, Nagai City, Yamagata Prefecture, combining a shed for farm implements with a barn where dairy cows were once kept; it was listed as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2022/10/31.
It lies to the north-east of the main house, set apart on the front side of the compound as Yamagata Prefecture puts it. The work shed at the south end and the cowshed at the north run in a single line from south to north, continuing the row begun by the front storehouse. The building is wooden and single storey, with a building area of 68 square metres, and was extended in the mid-Showa period.
It is one registration but two buildings joined end to end, each with its own job: the shed held the tools of rice growing, while the barn housed milking cows. Rice and dairy sit side by side in the Former Matsuoka Family Residence Work Shed and Cowshed.
Why It Was Registered
The building holds registration number 06-0207 from the 103rd round of national registrations, under the criterion of contributing to the historic landscape.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs notes that this long north-south range, together with the front storehouse, makes up the historic rural face of the farmstead. It stands on the front side of the compound, sharing that role with the thatched main house. The survival of a cowshed for dairy cattle also matters: it shows a modern farm in the basin reaching beyond rice.
What to Look For
A thatched shed and a metal-roofed barn
The work shed to the south is single storey and gabled, its thatch now under temporary sheet metal. Joined to its north end is the cowshed, also gabled but roofed in sheet metal, with lean-tos on its north and west sides. The two roofs are recorded differently: thatch under temporary cover for the shed, sheet metal outright for the barn. The database dates the building to 1908 with a mid-Showa extension, but published sources do not say which part was added.
Windows along the cowshed
According to the prefecture, the east wall of the cowshed is lined with windows for light and ventilation. Cattle barns trap heat and moisture, and light and air were essential to keeping dairy cows healthy. In the database's photograph of the east side, the work shed is on the left and the cowshed on the right.
Posts marked by tethering bars
The cowshed posts still carry the holes for mase-bo, the horizontal bars laid across the openings of the stalls to keep the animals in; the same detail appears in the stable on the other side of the house. The database also includes a photograph of the interior where the cows were kept.
Visiting
The building is owned by Abe Shoten Co., Ltd. As of October 2026 we found no official announcement of interior openings, so please do not enter the grounds. It stands on the front side of the compound, but we have not confirmed how well it can be seen from outside.
The east elevation and the cattle area inside appear in photographs in the Agency for Cultural Affairs database, and the Former Matsuoka Family Residence Work Shed and Cowshed is also shown in the document Yamagata Prefecture published on registration.
