The Outer Gate and Its Virtuoso Carving
The first structure a visitor meets on the approach to Zenpōji is the outer gate, set on the path in front of the larger main gate. It is small, with a frontage of about 3.3 meters, but it repays a slow look. Almost every wooden surface has been carved, and the work is skilled enough that the gate reads as a showcase for the sculptor's craft rather than a simple entrance.
Zenpōji, a Sōtō Zen temple west of Tsuruoka in Yamagata Prefecture, is a temple of the dragon deity and a place of prayer for those who work the sea. This gate opens the visitor's path into the precinct. It was rebuilt in 1856, in the late Edo period, and it is registered not as a building but as a structure of another kind, reflecting its role as a gate rather than a hall.

In form it is a four-legged gate with a gabled roof of pan tiles. Small wicket doors are set into the flanking wing walls on either side. The bracketing is arranged as projecting brackets, and the purlins and gable beams are carried forward beyond the posts. The carving covers a wide range of subjects. Beam-end noses and the decorative patterning of the tie beams, together with frog-leg struts and the boards between them, are worked with three-dimensional motifs of waves and of plants and animals. The whole gate is a demonstration of what a skilled carving carpenter could do, and it is valued as evidence of that high level of workmanship.
What to Look For
Give this gate more time than its size suggests. The carvings are said to include the twelve animals of the zodiac worked into the decoration, so it is worth searching the beams and struts for the rat, the ox, the tiger, and the rest. On the upper part of one side is an openwork carving of a wish-granting jewel among waves, the nyoi hōju that is held to grant prayers.
Because the gate stands at the entrance, it sets the tone for everything beyond it: the pagoda, the rakan hall, the two-story main gate, and the halls of the dragon deity higher up. The carving here is not painted, so the grain and the depth of the cutting carry the effect on their own. Reading the animals and the wave patterns before you step through is a good way to slow down and enter the grounds with your eyes already open.
