A Clay-Walled Storehouse of the 1880s

The Former Nomura Family Residence Storehouse (旧野村家住宅土蔵, Kyū Nomura-ke Jūtaku Dozō) is a clay-walled storehouse built around 1886 on the plot of the Former Nomura Family Residence in Shimotatekoji, Yamaguchi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, and was registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property (structure) on August 23, 1999 (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The Agency for Cultural Affairs records a single-storey dozo storehouse with a tiled roof and a building area of 31 square metres; registration number 35-0026, owned by Yamaguchi City.

Why It Was Registered

The storehouse was registered as a structure contributing to the historic landscape of the country. The Agency for Cultural Affairs counts it among the outbuildings that show the prosperity of a family enriched by sake brewing.

What to Look For

The storehouse stands near the centre of the wide plot, northeast of the main house, facing the old Hagi Okan road that ran from Hagi through Yamaguchi to Mitajiri. It is 3 bays by 2, with a separate roof set over the clay body (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

It was used for the family's own goods rather than for trade (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Seen together with the main house, it shows how a sake merchant's property on the Hagi Okan was laid out.

Visiting

The storehouse stands in the grounds of the Yamaguchi Furusato Heritage Center. No information on opening its interior has been published.

The address is 12 Shimotatekoji, Yamaguchi City. It is about 25 minutes on foot from JR Yamaguchi Station, or about 20 minutes by car from the Ogori interchange of the Chugoku Expressway, with free parking for about 20 cars (Yamaguchi Prefecture tourism site).
