Enmyoji Temple

Enmyoji Temple (圓明寺) in Inuyama, Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture, is a Jodo Shinshu temple whose early Edo main hall, late Edo priests' quarters, mid-Meiji monks' quarters, mid-Edo bell tower and gate of 1937 were registered as Registered Tangible Cultural Properties on August 13, 2012 (Agency for Cultural Affairs). All five are owned by the temple and were registered for their contribution to the historic landscape.

The Five Buildings

The main hall at the north end of the precinct is a hip-and-gable hall of full tiles that keeps early forms such as square pillars throughout. The priests' quarters are a castle-town townhouse moved here in the mid-Meiji period, still showing its curved roof and front lattices, and the monks' quarters between them is a reception building with a formal entrance of fine timber (Agency for Cultural Affairs).

The bell tower, facing the priests' quarters on a stone base, is an open Zen-style tower with strongly upturned eaves, and the gate at the south front is a four-legged gate with a cusped gable by Ito Heizaemon (Agency for Cultural Affairs). Each building is described on its own page.
