The Former Ito Limited Partnership Company Main Building (旧伊東合資会社主屋, Kyū Itō Gōshi Gaisha Omoya) is a late Edo period house in Kamezaki, Handa City, Aichi Prefecture, registered as a national Registered Tangible Cultural Property (building) on 31 October 2022. It stands on the Morozaki Kaidō, the old road that runs along Kinuura Bay, and it housed both the domestic life and the business of the Ito family, brewers of the sake brand Shikishima.

The house is a timber structure of two storeys with a single-storey portion, roofed in Sangawara-buki pantiles over a Kirizuma-zukuri gable, entered on the long side in the Hirairi manner. Its ridge runs a long way east to west, and the building covers 291 square metres. The Agency for Cultural Affairs describes it as the main house of an old family of shōya rank, meaning a household that held village headman status rather than simply trading.

Three building campaigns are recorded. The core dates from the closing decades of the Edo period, roughly 1830 to 1868. Extensions followed in the middle Meiji era and again in 1913. The plan grew as the family's circumstances changed, which is why the ridge line runs as far as it does.

Kamezaki sits at the base of the Chita Peninsula and prospered as a port shipping sake to Edo. The Ito firm traces its founding to 1788, and its successor company records that the family also dealt in miso and soy sauce, ran a pharmacy and helped establish a bank. The Former Ito Limited Partnership Company Main Building was the administrative centre of that spread of interests.

Why the house was registered

The Former Ito Limited Partnership Company Main Building was registered under the first of the three criteria used for this category, which recognises a building as a model of design. The storehouse on the same property was registered under a different criterion, the one for structures that contribute to the historic landscape, so the two buildings were valued for separate reasons.

Its registration number is 23-0580. The Council for Cultural Affairs recommended this building and two others on the same property at its 240th subcommittee meeting on 22 July 2022, and the registration was gazetted on 31 October of that year. The main house, the reception wing and the main storehouse all carry the same registration date, so the property was assessed as a group.

What the assessment singled out was the way the interior is organised. The Agency for Cultural Affairs points to the heavy exposed beam frame over the earthen-floored work space at the east end, the four living rooms laid out in a two-by-two grid to the west of it, and the formal rooms continuing further west again. Work, family life and hospitality occupy three zones in sequence along one axis, a pattern typical of brewing households of the late Edo and Meiji years.

Reading the plan from east to west

The east end of the Former Ito Limited Partnership Company Main Building holds the doma, a working floor of packed earth left open to the roof. Thick beams cross overhead with no ceiling to hide them. In a brewing household this was where raw materials, tools and people moved through, and a floor that could be swilled down mattered more than comfort.

West of the doma the floor rises into four matted rooms arranged in a square, two by two. Japanese houses used this layout widely because the sliding partitions between the rooms can be lifted out, turning four rooms into one hall for a funeral, a wedding or a village meeting. For a household of standing, that flexibility was part of the point.

At the far west end is the old formal room, eight mats in size, fitted with a display alcove and an attached writing bay. The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls the room composed and formal. Eight mats is an ordinary size for such a room; the alcove and the writing bay are what raise its rank.

From outside, the thing to look at is length. The gabled ridge runs unusually far, the result of those successive extensions, and the frontage is noticeably wider than its neighbours along the old road.

Visiting

The Former Ito Limited Partnership Company Main Building belongs to Sugita Co., Ltd. As of August 2026 neither the owner nor Handa City publishes any schedule of interior openings, so visitors should not expect to go inside. The exterior faces the Morozaki Kaidō and can be seen from the public road, which is how most people will encounter it.

Photography from the road is unrestricted. The grounds are private property, so do not enter to take pictures, and avoid pointing a lens over the wall into the property.

The nearest station is Kamezaki on the JR Taketoyo Line, about 15 minutes on foot or 3 minutes by taxi. Coming from Nagoya Station, take the JR Tōkaidō Main Line to Ōbu and change to the Taketoyo Line, or board a semi-rapid service bound for Taketoyo and travel through without changing. By car it is about 15 minutes from the Agui interchange on the Chita Peninsula Road.

The former main brewery on the same block now operates as a commercial complex, and its shop opens Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00 to 17:00 (checked August 2026). It makes a convenient starting point for a walk around Kamezaki, though it is run by a different company and admission there does not include the registered buildings.
