What sangawara-buki means
Sangawara-buki is a tiled roof laid with pantiles, tiles whose cross-section runs in a continuous wave. Where the older system alternated half-round cap tiles with flat pan tiles, this one does the same work with a single tile shape.
Fewer tiles and less weight mean lighter loads on the roof frame and the structure below it. The technique spread widely from the early modern period across townhouses, storehouses built in Dozo-zukuri, and ancillary buildings at temples and shrines, and it appears constantly in the architectural records of the National Cultural Properties Database.
Records give the roof shape first and the material second. One building at the Oguri Residence in Aichi Prefecture is recorded as timber-framed, 46.00 square metres in area, Kirizuma-zukuri, with pantiles. The first term describes the shape and the second the covering.
A single building may carry more than one material. A storehouse at Kadocho in Wakayama Prefecture is recorded as being built in dozo-zukuri, 11.8 metres by 5.1 metres, partly two-storeyed, gabled, roofed in formal round-and-flat tiles with pantiles in part.
Telling it from formal tiling
Look up at the eaves. Formal tiling shows raised cylindrical caps at regular intervals with flat tiles sunk between them, a strong rhythm of ridges and troughs. Pantiles produce an unbroken wave with no separate cap tiles at all.
Records sometimes list two materials, such as sheet metal with pantiles in part, or pantiles with copper sheet in part. These entries record the history of extensions and reroofing rather than describing a single uniform covering, so a building may well show two surfaces from different angles.
Both a shorter and a longer spelling of the Japanese term are in circulation. The Agency for Cultural Affairs uses the shorter one in its records, which is the safer form to follow when quoting an entry.
