A Small Store in the South-East Corner
The Akagi Family Residence East Unhulled Rice Storehouse (赤木家住宅東籾蔵, Akagi-ke Jūtaku Higashi Momigura) is a single-storey earthen-walled storehouse of the mid-Meiji period in the south-east corner of the Akagi estate at 972 Hikino in Toyooka, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2 March 2006.
It is square, 2 bays by 2, with a building area of 16 square metres. To the north, beyond a small storage room, stands the east workshop; to the west runs wall two along the southern boundary.
It is a single storey, but a loft floor fills its eastern half.
Where the Tax Rice Went
The Agency for Cultural Affairs records that the Akagi Family Residence East Unhulled Rice Storehouse was used to store rice paid as land tax. The inside walls are boarded to keep grain off the damp earth.
The east workshop, where the crop was handled, and this store, where it was kept, stand next to each other on the same edge of the property: the harvest did not have far to travel.
A Floating Roof and White Plaster
The gabled roof of pantiles is an okiyane, set over the plastered body of the store as a separate shell to take the rain and sun. The west storehouse across the estate uses the same arrangement.
The door is on the west, long side, a pair of tsuchido, heavy plastered doors; a window opens on the east. The outer walls are finished in white shikkui lime plaster.
The Agency values the store for its neat, complete form, small as it is. It was registered for contributing to the historic landscape of the country.
Seeing the East Unhulled Rice Storehouse
The store sits in the south-east corner with its east face on the property line. Its doors face west into the compound, so the front can be seen only from inside the grounds.
The residence is a family home and is generally closed to the public, and no opening of the interior has been announced. Photography rules are not published; ask when you visit.
