A Shed Near the South-West Corner

The Akagi Family Residence West Storage Shed (赤木家住宅西物置, Akagi-ke Jūtaku Nishi Monooki) is a single-storey timber outbuilding from the late Meiji period near the southern end of the west side of the Akagi estate at 972 Hikino in Toyooka, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2 March 2006.

Its northern neighbour is the west gate, and beyond the gate the row of stores runs on: the warehouse, the rice store and the rest. The Akagi Family Residence West Storage Shed stands just apart from that row, on the far side of the gate.

It measures 3 bays by 1 and a half bays, with a building area of 18 square metres, under a gabled roof of pantiles.

Four Walls, Four Different Faces

Walk around the Akagi Family Residence West Storage Shed and each side turns out to be different.

The west face is solid board with no openings at all, shut against the outside of the property. The south side has a floor-level opening for sweeping out; the east wall has boarded lower panels and a lattice window; the door is on the north.

Closed to the outside, windowed toward the house, entered from the side nearest the gate: every wall has been made to suit how the shed was used.

Carrying the West Side Southward

The Agency for Cultural Affairs values the shed for shaping the west side of the estate. With it standing south of the stores, the line of buildings along that edge reaches almost to the southern boundary.

It was registered for contributing to the historic landscape of the country.

Seeing the West Storage Shed

The shed stands on the west side, south of the west gate. Its lattice window and door face into the compound, so they can be seen only from inside the grounds.

The residence is a family home and is generally closed to the public, and no opening of the interior has been announced. Photography rules are not published; ask when you visit.

Directions and the terms for visiting the property are on the Akagi Family Residence page.
