40 Metres of Wall Along the South
The Akagi Family Residence Wall Two (赤木家住宅塀二, Akagi-ke Jūtaku Hei Ni) is a late-Meiji timber wall that runs along the south side and around the south-west corner of the Akagi estate, 40 metres in all, at 972 Hikino in Toyooka, Hyogo Prefecture, registered as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property on 2 March 2006.
It comes in two stretches: one running west from the east rice storehouse at the eastern end of the south side, the other from the south-west corner up to the storage shed on the west side.
The roof is sheet iron, and the wall is built in the shinkabe way, with exposed posts every half bay.
A Finish That Changes by Stretch
Along the western half of the south side, the lower wall is vertical boarding and the upper part is left at the nakanuri stage: the middle coat of a clay wall, with no finishing coat over it, so the earth shows in its own colour and texture.
The other stretches are finished in vertical boards.
There is no white plaster top coat and no openwork anywhere. This is a plain, working wall.
The Other Wall
The estate's other perimeter wall, wall one, combines tiles, charred cedar and openwork, and encloses the ground north of the front gate. The Akagi Family Residence Wall Two, with sheet iron over boards and clay, takes the south and south-west.
The Agency for Cultural Affairs credits it with tidying the edge of the broad estate. It was registered for contributing to the historic landscape of the country.

The Akagi Family Residence Wall Two runs along the outer edge of the estate on the south and south-west.
